They probably should have started contract negotiations with him a year ago. That way they could have gotten him at a lower value than they would have this summer. Poor asset management to let him walk for nothing.

I'm not a Leafs fan, for those who seem concerned with 'gotcha' statements like this.
If he wants to leave then yes, they should trade him if he has no interest in staying. Asset management 101.

Canucks decided to pretend like they were still a competitive team instead of trading them away when they had value. Same with Iginla in Calgary. Teams need to understand their developmental and competitive cycles in order to maintain asset allocation in the long-run. Know when you're rebuilding and when you're challenging. There's no use in finishing 10th every season.
