My that corner changed! So happy I happened upon this photo. Have anymore?

^ back then you could probably come close to buying an entire block in Wolseley for the current market price of a single house.

For anyone who may have forgotten about it, the guy who runs this Flickr account featuring old Winnipeg photos has added some real gems lately, both from the distant and recent past.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/9513047@N05/page1

I'd love to post some pictures directly as there are some interesting buildings and streetscapes worth discussing, but unfortunately Flickr doesn't allow it.

Since the parking lot dream they have for that strip is not going to happen, hopefully GWL will allow for some development along Balmoral to the north of that house. There is still enough space there to put houses back in.

I lived in an apartment at the bend, less than 100 metres from that abandoned house for a couple of years, back in 2002-03. One evening while walking to the Village, I went and investigated, since I had no idea of the history of the home, and the fact that it was seemingly abandoned for years.

There were no signs on it, and it was not fenced off. Considering the area of it's location, I can't believe that some hooligans never torched it, or some squatter decided to break in, and make it his home.

It seemed so out of place, standing there at the corner of Mostyn and Balmoral.

This is a great album, makes me sad seeing some of the architecture that was lost, not to mention a perfectly fine and functioning streetcar system...

You would have to screen shot them.

Northstar Inn under construction in 1969 - neat seeing the Zellers store there.

Very cool and interesting pics in there. Thanks for sharing that.

I noticed there was a flyer for a ramones concert from 1983 in there. That was before my time, but i have read that Winnipeg had one of the best punk rock scenes in Canada during the 80s. Would have been a fun time to grow up in Winnipeg.

Sorry for the off topic.

Newport Centre has such a weirdly designed elevator/stair core. It’s also an incredible mess above the ceiling tiles for decades of shoddy workmanship compared to a lot of other towers I’ve been in around downtown.

ICYMI CBC Manitoba ran an interesting article last week looking back at the Union Bank Tower.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manit...ipeg-1.6838581

For the old school local SSPers, Union Bank Tower was a constant source of discussion and hand-wringing here for the years that it was practically abandoned. It was a prominent symbol of decline given that it was empty despite its historical importance and physical prominence. Its future was in some doubt, especially after the neighbouring Leland Hotel burned down in the mid/late 1990s.

Having Red River College step in and renovate it, and bring it back to life, was seen as a significant step for the Exchange District and downtown Winnipeg as a whole.
