Portage and Main will soon have two steakhouses: There's a GM job posted for 529 Uptown, which looks to be a spinoff of 529 Wellington, which will be on the main floor of 200 Portage Ave. and with some Japanese influence.

That's interesting news. Hopefully their front doors will open to the street to bring a little life to a perennially deserted corner (the SW corner, specifically).

I wonder if 201 Portage will chase this trend by getting a steakhouse of its own?

At 201 Portage not 200 . . .
WOW! Hospitality is pleased to present “529 Uptown”. This concept will be housed on the main level of the upscale, world-class 33-storey skyscraper in the heart of Downtown Winnipeg, 201 Portage Ave. 201 Portage boasts more than 500,000 square feet of office, retail and meeting space and will be having more than 1,500 souls working within when it is back to the office time.

Building on the reputation of excellence that 529 holds, Uptown will be a sister restaurant that is differentiating and unique in its design. Not only will it pay homage to the original but it will also feature some very cool Japanese Steakhouse inspired

Good news for Portage & Main.

It may even help with the open the intersection crowd - especially when someone goes to Hy's, discovers it's full and then wants to quickly walk over and check out that other steak house just across the street...

japanese steakhouse sounds awesome. I was just at one in minneapolis and it was really fun....they have a BBQ right in the table and you get plates of meat to cook by yourself. Hopefully its like that.

Yakiniku places can be fun. There are some in Toronto. However, Korean BBQ is more prevalent here.

BTW, was at Hargrave Street Market on the weekend. Glad it appears to be unscathed by the pandemic. The equivalents in Toronto did not do as well.

The Winnipeg Free Press cafe in the Exchanged has been closed for a few weeks, re-opening end of October, pretty extensive renos going on it appears. I recall seeing this place for sale a while back. Who actually owned it, was it the Free Press? I know they hosted speakers at one time but what's the point in naming it after a newspaper?

former earl's on main st. was just painted black with on-going demo to the interior. i was under the impression there was a larger plan for the corner ultimately but it appears to be being repurposed.
