I always had the impression of Berlin as a hard, mean sort of place -- a sort of brutalist Gotham City.

Meanwhile, my husband thoughtfully reminded me this morning that today was the day our hike up Mt. Vesuvius had been scheduled. Then my phone, ever vigilant, started peppering my Facebook feed with ads for some museum replica store that is supposed to be the official purveyor of replicas of relics from Pompeii. Thanks coronavirus!

Speaking of Alberta, apparently Vancouver's pedigree is that it supplies the world with the ubiquitous "girlfriend who lives in Canada"... Including Alberta:

It's interesting reading the comments on Berlin. Basically you could cut and paste them from something written in a non-Berlin newspaper at any period. To the best of my knowledge Berlin has always been a bit of an outlier in Germany. It must be because of some resentment/irritation/frustration(?) with the Prussians being the "winners" in unification. It's like team Wittelsbach (and others) are still pissed at team Hohenzollern 150 years later.

Kind of, yeah.

Modern-day Germany doesn't really have Prussian roots, but Berlin does. Remember that Germany didn't "reunify", rather (non-Prussian) West Germany absorbed (Prussian) East Germany.

It feels like another country. And the Cold War division widened the cultural gap. But I don't think Germans are "pissed" at Berlin, they just don't identify with it. I have elderly German relatives that have never been to Berlin, but they've been to Paris countless times.

This Berlin hype has been going for at least 10 years or so. I admit I found it a bit annoying when I came across with it on SSC, SSP or elsewhere.

However, when I finally visited, the city is indeed doing great. Edgy, creative, lots of things to do and see. One of the most interesting and vibrant urban centres in the world.

Speaking of edgy and creative... I think the highlight of my first visit to Berlin was wandering into a pub-type bar and unexpectedly discovering two naked chicks on stage, boning each other doggy-style with a double-ended dildo, while a band played American classic folk-rock songs like the "Mighty Quinn" and "Leavin' on a Jet Plane"... and only about half the people in the place were even paying any attention to the spectacle.

What about Potsdam? My great-grandparents were 'Prussian' or so we think and emigrated from that area. It's fairly close enough to Berlin. I know very little about them or that part of Germany. They died when my gran was young. We think they might have been Jewish who converted to Catholicism but who knows...

I've been to Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Berlin (plus a bunch of smaller German cities).

I loved them all, but Berlin really stood out as one of the coolest places I have ever been, in my many travels around the world.

.

So does Okotoks on account of it's number of things to do surpassing any city on this planet. So does North Battleford (just not in a good way)!

I think Detroit has it going on, if anything for being the birthplace of that Motown sound, and that entire soul music scene of the 60's and 70's..Stax records.
Original 6 NHL team city as well, if that means anything..Just having a large identifiable music scene and sound, which wasn't even their primary industry, gives that city some pedigree IMO.

I agree about Montreal..It just has that some something, something vibe going on with it..It has a strong local culture.Extra points for having a signature (Montreal smoked meat) sandwich associated with the city..I suppose all those Habs dynasties adds to it's identity. It's also the largest Francophone city outside of Paris. Just being a large francophone presence in North America makes it unique. What I've always noticed on our visits to Montreal was how well dressed the people were. The elderly people milling about downtown always seemed dressed to the nines just to go shopping. I love Toronto, but I've always found that Montreal has a stronger local culture. It's also a very friendly, laid back, and open city.At least from our experiences.
