I was wondering if that's why the skyline was so dark at night - glad they are protecting the wildlife. Was back home in Austin for a few days for Thanksgiving and was utterly floored when I saw the breadth of the skyline from the 183/Mopac SB flyover. Even though I religiously keep track of development on here, it's something else to see it in person. Block 185 has to be the most stunning contemporary skyscraper in Texas, maybe anywhere in the south. Was behind the wheel driving south over town lake, but I'll remember that quick glance to the left for a while.
Was great to come home; the closest thing to topography we have in Dallas are the landfills and highway interchanges (and there are plenty!). The mass of the downtown skyline is impressive, but it's also imposing and unattractive and encircled by gigantic freeways.
My younger brother, who lives in Portland and is not particularly fond of current-Austin and it's growth, even admitted this week that our skyline is particularly eye-catching and pleasing. He and his girlfriend said the Sail looked like a futuristic building out of Dubai except better looking, ha! I think his overall take on the urban-core was something to the effect of "a less corporate-looking Seattle."
