That black mobile crane is colossal. I wonder how it compares to the one at the Tribune Tower.

Seems odd the way they delay this until well after anything could reasonably be changed. Has a permit ever been denied at this stage ?

Yes, that is the mud mat being placed.

And this is a section of the permanent slab being cast on top of the mud mat:

Haven't seen them smoothing out a mud-mat to this degree before. It appears that once the floor sets the mud-mat will be chipped off (after the next level is dug out). I had expected normal forms just placed directly on the soil.

I think they put more time into smoothing it out because it's essentially the formwork for the ceiling of the floor below, so it can't be as rough as mud mats usually are

^Yes, the mud mat is the formwork for the slab above and gets removed during the mining process. They cannot begin mining until the L1 slab is cast as that creates the top of the diaphragm and supports the cap beam at the top of the secant wall. After L1 is cast, the berm that is currently supporting the secant wall can be removed and LL1 can be placed all the way to the secant wall. Then LL2 is mined out and the process is repeated (place LL2 mud mat, place LL2 permanent slab, mine out under LL2 for LL3 slab). There are 4 lower levels, so the full process won't be complete until the towers are well underway (structure complete in the 20's or 30's).

Very cool thread, thank you to all who have posted such comprehensive updates. I apologize if this has been covered, I've only been following this thread intermittently-- how many total below-grade levels are there, and how many are being excavated traditionally vs. built top-down? Are there floor plans publicly available?

This would make a very low ceiling - area for planters ?

Looks to be too big for planters. My guess is that is the storm detention tank and it is shallow enough for cars to drive underneath it in the parking level below.

Also, looks like the 3rd tower crane base was set. Looks like we will have two projects in the city with 3 active tower cranes before the end of the year. 2020 is going to be a fun year for construction watchers in Chicago!

The tower base is just sitting there - the gray area will be woven into a mat when it finds it's final home.

[ edit : thought I had posted this one ]
