SpaceX breathes fire in South Texas for the first time in 2022

Two test firings on Tuesday bring the company closer to a Starship orbital flight.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2022...-time-in-2022/

SpaceX ignited engines on both the first and second stages of its Starship launch system on Wednesday, signaling that it is getting closer to a test flight of the massive rocket later this year.

On Monday evening at 5:20 pm local time in South Texas, engineers ignited a single Raptor engine on the Super Heavy booster that serves as the rocket's first stage. This is the first time the company has conducted a static fire test of the booster, which will ultimately be powered by 33 Raptor rocket engines.

About three hours later, on a separate mount at its "Starbase" facility in Texas, SpaceX ignited two engines on the Starship upper stage of the rocket. The company later shared a short video on Twitter of the evidently successful test.

These two static firings, which are intended to test the plumbing of the rocket's liquid oxygen and methane propellant systems, are significant. They are the first static fire tests of 2022 at the South Texas launch site. Moreover, these vehicles—dubbed Booster 7 and Ship 24 to reflect their prototype numbers—could be the ones that SpaceX uses for an orbital launch attempt. Finally, this is the first time SpaceX has test-fired its new version of the Raptor engine, Raptor 2, on a rocket.

These tests follow a year-long period of development work by SpaceX to mature the design of the Starship vehicle from a prototype used for short, 10 km hops into a vehicle that can climb above Earth's atmosphere and then survive the fiery return back to the planet's surface. This work has included an evolving design of steering flaps as well as heat shield tiles to protect the vehicle. SpaceX has also had to build a series of Super Heavy prototypes before reaching a design believed to be flightworthy.

So, anything having to do with architecture on this thread these days? Renderings, maps, photos? For folks primarily interested in building development, Elon's "blow by blow" schedule for conquering the world seems a lot to scroll through.

Renderings, maps of what??? We've already seen photos of the factory, not like there is much else to see... There is no grand fancy HQ or anything. The rest is just news updates....

The title of the thread is Tesla/Space X/Boring Co./Elon Musk, so you are getting updates on Telsa, SpaceX, Boring Co. and anything to do with the ridiculous man that is Elon Musk.

If you don't like the updates on Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Co. or Elon Musk please feel free to block me, because they will continue.

If you want updates only on the factory building, maybe it is time to separate it out from a thread that is about Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Co. and Elon Musk in general.

This thread is not just about that building, it is about Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Co. and Elon Musk.

So that's a nope on the architecture for now.

The Hacking of Starlink Terminals Has Begun

It cost a researcher only $25 worth of parts to create a tool that allows custom code to run on the satellite dishes.

https://www.wired.com/story/starlink...net-dish-hack/

SINCE 2018, ELON Musk’s Starlink has launched more than 3,000 small satellites into orbit. This satellite network beams internet connections to hard-to-reach locations on Earth and has been a vital source of connectivity during Russia’s war in Ukraine. Thousands more satellites are planned for launch as the industry booms. Now, like any emerging technology, those satellite components are being hacked.

Today, Lennert Wouters, a security researcher at the Belgian university KU Leuven, will reveal one of the first security breakdowns of Starlink’s user terminals, the satellite dishes (dubbed Dishy McFlatface) that are positioned on people’s homes and buildings. At the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, Wouters will detail how a series of hardware vulnerabilities allow attackers to access the Starlink system and run custom code on the devices.

Musk Watch: Elon's rare W as Tesla passes 3M mark, breaks sales records

https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/lo...s-17374396.php

And on Sunday, August 14, Giga Shanghai pushed Tesla over the three million mark, noted in a tweet from the company's founder. It appears that our South African overlord has taken over the car industry. That's a lot of cars, right? Well, kinda.

SpaceX banking on Starship launches from South Texas to ramp up deployment of Starlink satellites

https://www.expressnews.com/business...s-17380479.php

As SpaceX works toward the first orbital launch of a Starship from South Texas, it’s with the idea of deploying hundreds of the Starlink communications satellites the company has said are key to its future.

Elon Musk’s private space company this month has been conducting static fire tests — full dress rehearsals for a rocket — in preparation for the massive Starship’s long-sought first trip into orbit from Boca Chica. It’s also been raising billions of dollars to fund the Starship and Starlink projects.

While Musk has been widely quoted about his dreams of colonizing Mars and taking people and cargo to the moon, his company’s immediate plans are in low earth orbit, with a satellite business that’s taking an increasingly Texas flavor.

“The big secret that is not so secret is that they now have actual Starlink satellites there in Boca Chica and have loaded them in to SN24 like a giant PEZ dispenser,” an ex-SpaceX employee said this week, referring by number to a Starship that’s been on the launch pad since early last month. “On the first orbital launch from Boca, Elon wants to deploy satellites on its very first test mission, which is very ambitious.”

Austin-based Tesla appears set to break into Texas retail electricity market

https://www.statesman.com/story/busi...t/65409859007/

Austin-based Tesla appears to be ready to break into the Texas retail electricity market.

While Tesla has yet to make a formal announcemmtnt, it has posted a job opening describing an "emerging electricity retail business" that it plans to launch in Texas. The post was first reported on by Electrek, a news and commentary site focused on electric vehicles.

Tesla posting calls for a "product operations manager" and says the role will "support the launch and growth of a new electricity retailer in the Texas market." The posting says the product operations manager will be responsible for managing retail electricity products, administering the customer portfolio, coordinating customer support and tracking financial performance.

Tesla's job description suggests the company is looking to explore a number of options for retail electricity products including traditional approaches and distributed energy sources including solar, storage, electric vehicles and other products.

Musk Watch: Elon tweets his P.O. box, wants Central Texas hyperloop

https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/lo...n-17389392.php

Flight-tracking apps are not just for checking to see if Nick Saban or Urban Meyer are shopping for McMansions in Westlake. Earlier this year, a college student named Jack Sweeney made the news after his Twitter account, @ElonJet, received a DM that Sweeney says came from Musk himself. Sweeney tracks a Gulfstream G650ER that he has pinpointed as Musk's private jet, and posts its whereabouts, fuel used, and emissions.

Musk, according to a story in the New York Times, was not happy about the account, and allegedly offered Sweeney $5,000 to deactivate it. The billionaire appeared nervous for security reasons, which is understandable, but does not jibe with a recent tweet by Musk.

Nice letter from Bill Nix, who would’ve been my prof at Stanford if I hadn’t put grad studies on (permanent) deferment pic.twitter.com/ioq0mGwN7K
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 19, 2022

Musk posted a screenshot of a letter written to him by Bill Nix, a professor emeritus of engineering at Stanford. The content of the letter is mostly boring — stuff about batteries, fawning praise about Elon — but what Musk's followers glommed onto was the address line. Nix sent the letter to Musk's P.O. box in Lakeway, which Musk failed to crop out or cover with his thumb. Reactions ranged from thirsty and weird ("We are neighbors! Come hang with us sometime. You still owe me lunch from years ago. I don’t forget.") to, well ... most were thirsty and/or weird.

Is that your big ol thumb?
— Plain ol’ Chris (@bigstupid420) August 19, 2022

Days later, Musk, the man concerned about security, still hasn't taken it down. With that kind of epic engagement, how could he?

Hyperloop Back

Remember Elon Musk's big idea? No, not the Mars thing. Not the electric cars. Before the tunnels. Ah yes, the hyperloop, Musk's circa-2012 magnetic propulsion train that seemed to have run out of steam a few years later when he started building rockets and digging under Bastrop.

Would be cool to do a (much simplified) Hyperloop demo tunnel between maybe Austin & San Antonio?
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) August 22, 2022

Well, it's back, I guess, and Musk wants to connect San Antonio and Austin (who is he, my editor?) via the hyperloop. Seeing as he's having an issue digging a hole from the Alamo City to, uh, Silicon Hills (does anyone call it this?) because San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg has no time for him, Musk is floating the levitated train again. Or maybe he's just posting.

Either way, a bullet train between San Antonio and Austin would be wonderful. Or a regular train. Anything to keep me away from the traffic in Schertz, baby. They love their traffic in Schertz don't they, folks?

Speaking of...

Baby You Can Drive My Car for $15,000 Extra

Our boy is raising the price on the self-driving feature at Tesla. That's a 25% increase beginning on September 5, so lock in your $12,000 Full Self-Driving package today.

Tesla's Autopilot program has raised some questions after crashes that Musk said he didn't know about and a finding by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the self-driving mechanism shuts itself off one second before a crash. Seems normal.

Anyway, one ticket for the hyperloop please.

Austin-based Tesla hopes to bring in new investors after stock split

https://www.statesman.com/story/busi...s/65418215007/

Unlike its cars, Tesla's shares are about to get less expensive.

The Austin-based auto and technology company is splitting its stock 3 for 1, so after the close of trading Wednesday, investors will receive two additional Tesla shares for every one they owned as of Aug. 17. In theory, that should drop Tesla’s share price by about two-thirds before trading starts on Thursday.

Stock splits don't make a company more valuable or more profitable. Tesla joins stock market heavyweights Amazon and Google parent Alphabet in splitting their high-priced shares this year. Even meme-stock darling GameStop has done a stock split.

Tesla wants videos of its cars running over child-sized dummies taken down

https://www.theverge.com/2022/8/25/2...s-dawn-project

Tesla is demanding that an advocacy group remove videos of its vehicles running over child-sized mannequins, escalating the debate over the safety of the company’s Full Self-Driving software.

Tesla sent a cease-and-desist letter to the Dawn Project, an anti-Tesla group fronted by software developer Dan O’Dowd. In it, the company alleges the videos are defamatory and misrepresents the capabilities of its driver-assist technology. (The letter was first reported by The Washington Post.)

The letter is in response to an advertisement from the Dawn Project that purports to show a Tesla vehicle with FSD software running over a child-sized mannequin while driving at 20 mph.

“It has come to our attention that you, personally, and The Dawn Project have been disparaging Tesla’s commercial interests and disseminating defamatory information to the public regarding the capabilities of Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD) (Beta) technology,” Dinna Eskin, senior director and deputy general counsel at Tesla, writes in the letter. “We demand that you immediately cease and desist further dissemination of all defamatory information, issue a formal public retraction within 24 hours and provide Tesla with the below demanded documentation.”

The letter comes a few days after YouTube removed several videos that show Tesla drivers carrying out their own safety tests to determine whether the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software would enable it to automatically stop for children walking across or standing in the road. Those videos were posted in response to demonstrations by O’Dowd’s group that showed Tesla vehicles using FSD running over the child-sized dummies.

It does not appear that Tesla filed any objections to the videos from its fans using real children to demonstrate FSD’s driver-assist capabilities. But it claims that the Dawn Project’s videos “portray unsafe and improper use of FSD Beta and active safety features,” adding that the group’s actions “actually put consumers at risk.”

Eskin also demands that O’Dowd and the Dawn Project preserve records and communications related to its anti-Tesla advertising campaign, noting that the company was putting the group “on notice” for future legal action.

Tesla is finding itself under increasing scrutiny over its decision to allow nonprofessional drivers to test a beta version of its driver-assist software on public roads. Critics say the company is endangering the lives of its customers as well as pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers on the road. Tesla supporters insist FSD is safer than human driving.

Earlier this month, auto safety advocate Ralph Nader called on federal regulators to recall FSD, calling its deployment “one of the most dangerous and irresponsible actions by a car company in decades.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating 16 crashes in which Tesla owners using Autopilot crashed into stationary emergency vehicles, resulting in 15 injuries and one fatality. The probe was recently upgraded to an “Engineering Analysis,” which is the second and final phase of an investigation before a possible recall.

Tesla vehicles today come standard with a driver-assist feature called Autopilot. For an additional $15,000, owners can buy the FSD option, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly promised will one day deliver fully autonomous capabilities. But to date, FSD remains a “Level 2” advanced driver-assistance system, meaning the driver must stay fully engaged in the operation of the vehicle while it’s in motion.

In addition to the emergency vehicle crashes, NHTSA has also compiled a list of Special Crash Investigations (SCI) in which the agency collects data beyond what local authorities and insurance companies typically gather at the scene. The agency also examines crashes involving advanced driver-assist systems, like Tesla’s Autopilot, and automated driving systems.

O’Dowd’s group is not the first to highlight some potential flaws in Tesla’s FSD. Earlier this year, lidar manufacturer Luminar published a video demonstrating how its laser sensors enabled vehicles to stop for child-sized dummies, while Tesla’s camera-only based system did not.

Nonetheless, O’Dowd seems to relish in irking Musk. The software company executive previously ran a full-page ad in The New York Times disparaging Tesla’s FSD, offering $10,000 to the first person who could name “another commercial product from a Fortune 500 company that has a critical malfunction every 8 minutes.”

Tesla supporters note that O’Dowd runs Green Hill Software, which does business with some of Tesla’s competitors, including General Motors, BMW, and Ford. Tesla’s supporters note that he has a financial stake in publicly shaming the company. Meanwhile, Musk responded to the Dawn Project in his own fashion, noting that no one has died while using FSD, and labeling Green Hill Software as “a pile of trash.”

In response to Tesla’s cease-and-desist letter, O’Dowd called Musk a “crybaby hiding behind his lawyer’s skirt.”

“He is obsessed with stopping me from exposing that his Full Self-Driving cars could mow down a child dressed in a safety vest in a school crosswalk,” O’Dowd said in a statement. “I guess because that wouldn’t be good for the brand.”

SpaceX & T-Mobile to bring direct satellite connection to cell phones with ‘Coverage Above and Beyond’

https://spaceexplored.com/2022/08/25...ne-connection/

Yesterday, SpaceX and T-Mobile announced they would be holding a big event. With Musk hyping up the event as “something special” and “big news,” speculation was rife on Twitter with guesses as to what the big announcement could be. Now, it is clear that the announcement lives up to those expectations, as T-Mobile and Starlink announced Coverage Above & Beyond – a direct Starlink connection to existing phones that will bring cellular connectivity anywhere in the world, regardless of how close you are to any cell tower.

SpaceX started the presentation by highlighting the needs for communication as “nearly 20% [of the US is] unreachable by traditional wireless networks.” Starlink’s main terminals bring high-speed internet to those locations, but are large, expensive, and require a clear line of sight to the whole sky.

With this latest move, T-Mobile aims to totally eliminate mobile dead-zones by integrating their existing mid-band PCS spectrum into Starlink V2 satellites launching as soon as next year. This will allow phones to connect directly to the satellites, without any changes needed to those phones. This will allow MMS and SMS text messages, and eventually voice and small amounts of data, anywhere in the world. T-Mobile also announced that they plan to include this service on their standard plans, for no additional or increased cost.

The speeds and connectivity are far more limited than the full-size terminals or standard 4G or 5G connectivity – there will be just two to four megabits of bandwidth per cellular zone. While this is very slow, this partnership will provide life-saving connectivity when needed. Of course, to connect to such small antennas on the ground, large and powerful antennas are needed in space. This will come with the second-generation Starlink satellites, which are set to launch on SpaceX’s Starship rocket. These new antennas for T-Mobile’s spectrum will be in addition to the Ku and Ka-band antennas for SpaceX’s Starlink terminals, and the laser links that allow high-speed communication between the satellites. Folding out from the main body of the much larger V2 Starlink satellite, the cellular antennas will be “roughly 25 square meters.” Musk also clarified that V2 Starlink satellites will not launch on Falcon 9, but there could be an interim satellite that could fit into the rockets’ smaller fairing if Starship is delayed more than expected.

This won’t go live for some time, with the earliest connectivity expected in late 2023. While this partnership is between SpaceX and T-Mobile, the two companies shared aspirational plans for “reciprocal roaming,” where other carriers will share parts of their spectrum for use on Starlink satellites, so as many people as possible have mobile satellite connectivity in as many locations as possible.

T-Mobile also said in response to a press question that they are “open to” using Starlink for some of their data backhaul, though they don’t have specific plans at the moment. Using Starlink for backhaul could help bring higher-speed data into even more rural areas.

While there was speculation about Apple bringing satellite connection to the iPhone ahead of the launch of the iPhone 13 and once again with iPhone 14, with these satellites using existing bands, any additional hardware or software won’t be necessary – direct satellite connectivity will work with existing iPhone and Android devices.

Dish and Viasat’s fight against Starlink satellite deployment fails in court

Dish interference claim rejected; Viasat environmental protest "too speculative."

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...ails-in-court/

Dish Network and Viasat lost their attempt to block one of the key approvals Starlink received from the Federal Communications Commission. On Friday, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected the Viasat and Dish protests in a ruling that upheld the FCC decision.

Dish and Viasat sued the FCC after the commission's April 2021 decision to let SpaceX fly 2,824 of its Starlink satellites at a lower altitude than originally planned, in the 540-570 km range instead of 1,110-1,325 km. The FCC rejected protests from satellite competitors while agreeing with SpaceX that the altitude change would improve broadband speed and latency while making it easier to minimize orbital debris.

A panel of three DC Circuit judges heard the appeal and unanimously sided with the FCC and SpaceX, which was an intervenor in the case on the FCC's behalf. "Dish argued that the proposed changes would interfere with its GSO [geostationary orbit] satellite television service," the judges wrote. "Another competitor, Viasat, Inc., jointly objected with an environmental organization calling itself The Balance Group. They argued that NEPA [the National Environmental Policy Act] required the FCC to prepare an environmental assessment before granting the modification."

Dish claimed the FCC did not adequately consider the risk of signal interference, but the judges rejected that argument on the merits. Judges denied The Balance Group's appeal, saying the group lacked standing as it failed to adequately explain its operations or membership. They rejected Viasat's appeal because the company's theory for why it was injured by the FCC decision is "much too speculative" and "does not fall within the zone of interests protected by NEPA."

In summary, judges found that the FCC "adequately explained its conclusion that the modification of SpaceX's license would not interfere with Dish's satellites, and there is no proper party to pursue the NEPA claim." The same court in July 2021 rejected Viasat's motion for a preliminary injunction that would have halted Starlink satellite launches while litigation continued. The case was argued in December 2021, and the court's opinion was filed by Circuit Judge Gregory Katsas.

The losing parties could ask the DC Circuit appeals court to rehear the case in front of all the court's judges or file a petition with the Supreme Court. But either avenue would probably be a long shot.

SpaceX files to build 520K-square-foot facility in Bastrop County

Construction could start soon on warehouse five times larger than a typical H-E-B

https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/n...Pos=5#cxrecs_s

The size of what Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp. plans in Bastrop County, east of Austin, is coming into focus — and it appears to be massive.

The company wants to construct a 521,521-square-foot "shell building," according to an Aug. 31 filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. An estimated project cost of $43 million was given, along with an expected completion date of July 2023.

Tesla seeks to overturn Louisiana ban on direct car sales

https://www.reuters.com/legal/tesla-...es-2022-08-30/

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has filed a lawsuit to challenge Louisiana's refusal to allow the company to sell vehicles directly to consumers, calling the U.S. state's move protectionist and anti-competitive.

The case is the latest battle to reverse direct sales bans in some states against the electric carmaker, which bypassed traditional car dealerships. In those states, consumers have to travel to neighboring states to secure Tesla vehicles.

Tesla claimed Louisiana officials have violated state and federal antitrust laws by barring direct sales since 2017 and trying to restrict the leasing and servicing of its cars in Louisiana.

"Louisiana consumers' freedom is being unduly restricted by protectionist, anti-competitive and inefficient state regulation," according to the lawsuit, which was filed on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Tesla accused Louisiana dealers, dealer association and some members of the Motor Vehicle Commission of entering an "unlawful conspiracy to bar Tesla from doing business in Louisiana."

In 2016, Tesla also sued Michigan for the state's direct sales ban and reached a settlement in 2020 under which Tesla can have its cars serviced in Michigan through a subsidiary.

We talk a lot about the effect that Tesla will have on Austin, but honestly Bastrop is going to be an even bigger beneficiary, at least from a per capita standpoint.
