Vintage Canada: 1984-1996

Here's another series of my scanned slides from the '80s and '90s. Growing up in Minnesota, I always looked favorably to our neighbor to the north. It helped that from a very young age, I always thought they had the coolest looking flag. Over the decades I've paid many visits to Canada and have always enjoyed it. Here's a collection from various trips during the 1980s and 1990s.

In my mind, Vancouver was at its best in 80-90.

Great collection of photos! Nice to see cities from across the country, but I especially liked seeing the Vancouver photos given how much it's changed over the last four decades.

Incredible photos! Thanks for sharing. It’s for threads like this that I still check the My City Photos page periodically.

Other than the cars, that photo in Brandon, MB looks like it was taken in 1964, not 1984. You can really see how small towns lag behind big cities in how they look by about 20 years. I know some villages in rural Ontario that look like they’re stuck in a mid-90s time warp today.

That's when BC Place was built and then 3 years later the city held Expo 86

I can't figure out that Kamloops picture though because i'm sure the city had some mid-rises and high-rises by 1984

Canadian cities have changed since the days of the "business" skyline, now it's softer & more polished around the edges. The photos have a decided vintage look, I think I even have similar photos of these cities from the film camera era. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments!
Phil: Your comment inspired me to look at GoogleEarth. Though I was pretty sure it was Kamloops, I couldn’t figure it out when scanned it (hence the question mark in the caption). I found that the Kamloops photo is indeed Kamloops. It’s taken from above Grandview Terrace near Boundary Road. The homes in the foreground look virtually the same. Not really looking over the downtown area, so no highrises would be visible.

Some amazing photos there!

And yes, that is definitely Kamloops.

I think your pic is of the north shore looking east which doesn't have any taller towers (the downtown skyline is on the south shore)

Is it proper to tell 1984-1996s a vintage? which reminds me of a vintage myself now.

I thought vintage is at least before 1960s.

Nice pictures! It's interesting how the littler things are what you notice most now: cars, signs, phone booths, clothes, gas prices, food prices, and so on.

I think they are intentionally placed phones for any emergencies that occurred on the bridge, etc., otherwise just for people wandering through the park.

That was THEN. I think we can consider vintage as anything over 25 years old now - as in classic cars. Vintage wine is 20 year old wine. Now, in photography, anything before the digital camera era might be vintage, not only because of age, but because of film format.

Great photos, Lions Gate decking was totally replaced in 2000-2001 while still keeping the suspension bridge open, a world first at the time.

What a treasure trove. I am very glad that I clicked on this thread. the Canada of my stomping ground days (esp. Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver).

Nice pics, and makes me feel old.

I'm old enough to clearly remember that era of Yonge Street & Toronto.

And the Western Canada pics are very cool. Wish I could have visited back then.
