Coastal Chile: Colorful Valparaíso and Viña del Mar

Two years ago, in March 2019, I traveled down to South America for my friend’s wedding in Lima, Peru. I stayed 4 days in Lima (photos here) and then flew off to Chile, where I spent two days/one night in Valparaíso before spending the rest of my time in Santiago and environs. Valparaíso is a very colorful city with lots of street art/graffiti covering many buildings in and around downtown. Here’s some of what I saw while out & about. I also have some photos from adjacent Viña del Mar which neighbors Valparaíso.

1) The view from my hotel room overlooked the industrial harbor of Valparaíso.

4) Walking around the historic downtown of Valparaíso.

35) Beautiful dinner setting on the restaurant terrace overlooking the city & harbor.

36) Excellent dinner with a local catch.

37) The following morning, I hopped on the Metro in Valparaíso and took the train to neighboring Viña del Mar.

38) Arriving at the Estación Viña del Mar. Yes this section of the line is in a subway.

39) The marine layer was thick with gray skies prevailing, but it was still a nice time wandering around coastal resort city known for its gardens and beaches.

After that, I headed back to my hotel for my suitcase and proceeded off to the transportation center to catch my bus to Santiago. Hope you enjoyed colorful Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. I really enjoyed my two days there!

Terrific photos!

It's nice seeing cities that don't often get posted on these forums. Looks like my kind of place to visit, too!

I've always wanted to go to Chile, too, but have never gone there yet.

haha very nice to see valpo again. i took the train to vina del mar to see about renting a car but we changed out mind later, so i didnt see too much there. thats sort of the main hotel area if you dont want to stay in the city up in the hills, but from your pics its much more scenic than i thought or its described.

we also took a metro bus down through wine country to isla negra for a day too. reminded me of the pacific nw a bit down there.

These pics are so neat! Valparaíso does fine grain very well. That's why I am so fascinated with South American cities. Thank you!

It looks like a very dynamic city, including all those steep streets and walkways and funiculars!
