An evening out in Old Town Temecula, CA... and Chaka Khan!

My partner and I went down to Temecula (about 80-something miles south of us) last Saturday, 11.27.2021, specifically to see Chaka Khan in concert at the Pechanga Resort Casino, and I took random pictures. The concert was at 8 pm, and we started driving there at around 3:30 pm... depending on traffic, it can take as little as 75-80 minutes, or as much as 2 hours or more. We figured we can eat dinner, walk around the Old Town a bit, and then go to the concert. We got there around 5pm, and of course this time of year, it's already dark by 5pm, so these pictures are all nighttime shots, kinda dark. If you find them dull, then please just change the channel.

He also got a hummus platter.

And I got a Greek salad.

We each got little key lime pies.

The restaurant was crowded.

After dinner, we had time to kill, so we walked around.

We were all "Oh look, a cheese shop. And it's open."

So of course we went in and got some cheese.

Started off with white sangrias and olives...

And then SHAZAM! Bread and cheese and fruit.

Wow I didn’t know Temecula had an historic downtown area, I’ve only passed through Temecula twice in my life.

My wife would be so jealous Chaka Khan is her favorite singer, and her claim to fame is she met Chaka and got to hang out in her dressing room. My wife started crying because she was so excited to meet her. Chaka was so nice she gave my wife a big hug and they took photos together. I like her too and I remember her first big hit with Rufus back in the early 70’s, most younger people probably don’t know but some of her best material was with Rufus, and even solo the best stuff isn’t the songs you here on the radio. Chaka has no equals when it comes to her powerful voice, unfortunately it’s changed over the years (I believe she had surgery a number of years back to remove palyps in her throat) but compared to the the artists today she’s still better than most. Thanks for sharing the photos.

I love Chaka Khan, and yeah, even though her voice has changed with age, she can still hit those notes and sustain them, too. And she chooses backup singers that can really sing, too; in my opinion that shows how confident she is in her own singing abilities. I know when she sings, she likes to imitate the sound of a horn, which gives her that distinctive singing style, and it adds to her singing with her backup singers. And yes, her songs with Rufus are great, she of course sang some of them at this concert.

That's really great that your wife got to meet Chaka! Wow!

Same here! I thought Temecula was just basically wine country. Nice to see it has a neat little downtown too.

Nice photos, sopes!

Yeah, it gives the place a focus and center.

I've actually never gone to the wineries of the Temecula Valley; I've only gone to Temecula to go gambling with my parents; my mom loves to gamble, and ever since California started opening up the casinos on the reservations, there really is no reason for them to go all the way to Vegas just to gamble. And I think Pechanga is one of the nicer casino/resorts in soCal; my parents would even go for the spa there. My partner and I have also gone to Temecula for the two meaderies they have there.

I'm not sure about how good the wines are from the Temecula Valley, but I've heard by a few people that they're pretty good. We don't go wine tasting at wineries often (if we want wine, we'll just buy some and drink it), but we have enjoyed Santa Barbara/Santa Ynez valley for the wines/wine tasting. We're not into Napa, we both find it extremely pretentious/annoying.

Sonoma might be more your speed. It's a little more laid back.

Oh yes, we enjoyed Sonoma. It definitely is more laid back and somehow not so hoity-toity like Napa. There's just something about Napa where it seems like everyone there is just putting on airs.

Nice photos - I have in-laws near Lake Elsinore and any time we visit, a trip to Temecula (annnd Pechanga since my sister in-law loves the slot machines ) is always on the itinerary. I forget which winery we went to; don’t think it was on the level of Napa but it wasn’t bad at all.

Thanks for sharing these photos! I've never been to Temecula, but now I'm very interested in checking it out! I knew of it as a Southern California wine region, but I had no clue they had such a cute little downtown.

Funny how these casinos attract big names from yesteryear. A couple years ago I thought about going out to Morongo to see the Isley Brothers (or what's left of them). Decided against it, as I thought it might be sad to see them in their current state. Glad to hear Chaka was still fun and put on a good show! I saw her several years ago at the Cincinnati Jazzfest and she was excellent then.

Thank you for posting these photos. I had no idea that Temecula had a nice, walkable, downtown. When I grew up in Southern California 25 years ago, I always thought of Temecula as being the hinterlands where bros who drive big trucks and rode dirt bikes lived.
