Agreed. It came out beautifully.

They look like glorified, higher-capacity buses. Are they typically articulated? If they are all-electric, that's good. Did you read something specific to Detroit-area?

The guys over on Detroityes made mention of them for the city and it piqued my interest.

Electric tram buses

I remember electric busses running on Grand River (and probably other streets as well) in the 1960's. That was after the streetcars went away. (which I just barely remember)

They're usually called "trolleybuses" here in the States. IIRC, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, and surprisingly Dayton, Ohio have them. Especially with Proterra's battery buses turning out to be total lemons, converting bus routes to trolleybus ones would be a fairly quick and easy (the tech is a century old) way to green a bus network.

But the limitation is that--they are buses. If you need to upgrade capacity, for example on a core radial network, then I would argue that an in-median light rail or "streetcar" (lower rail weight) would be the way to go.

Looks like they already sold two condominiums, according to their website.

There's a lot of great looking renderings on there we haven't seen before:

Hell yeah! Great project its not often that a neighborhood can be exemplified in a building but the preservation of the historic facade tastefully anchoring the corner of an edgy modern design .. this is the new Brush Park.

Again speaking of what’s not to like I stumbled upon this pic of the David Stott framed by multiple cranes.

Forrent

Bonus find! I was tempted to attempt to find a pic from 2015 when the previous owner allowed a burst water main to go undetected until water came pouring out the front door which was quickly becoming encased in ice for those who don’t remember. But why share the space with these beauties? Great angle of the Hudsons site is just the cherry on top

Thanks. At the lower end for aprox $1,300 - $1,800 a month for a 400-500 sq ft unit. At the upper end salon 1,200 - 1400 sq ft 3 bed 2 bath salons are goin for $3,900 - $9,000 a month. Would assume the 9k salons are on the highest residential floors, not sure if there is a restaurant / lounge operating at the top still.

I don't know much about Detroit metro area prices, but that's relatively expensive (US$ 1,300-1,800), right? I mean, a person could find a good suburban house.

It must be incredible to live there. When people realize what's happening, Downtown Detroit will become one of the hottest markets of the country.

Lear to make seats for GM, create 'hundreds of jobs' at Cadillac Stamping Plant site

Quote:
Lear Corporation will operate a seat manufacturing facility that will create "hundreds of new jobs" at the site of the former Cadillac Stamping Plant on Detroit’s east side, officials said Friday.

The Southfield-based company will produce seats for General Motors Co. electric vehicles, as first reported by Crain’s Detroit Business.

“We are excited to be supporting GM’s vision of moving to an all-electric future, and even more excited to be supporting that vision here in Detroit,” Lear Corp. said in a statement Friday. “As a supplier to the battery electric vehicles that will be built at GM’s Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck, we will be setting up a just-in-time seating manufacturing facility at the former location of the Cadillac Stamping Plant. The facility will be one of our most energy-efficient plants in North America, and not only create hundreds of new jobs, but will be another important step forward in the redevelopment of Detroit’s eastside neighborhood.”

The Goblin brings sushi to Detroit’s Mexicantown

Quote:
Readers, how do you solve the perennial sushi problem? The chunk of roll they serve you is too big for one mouthful, but there's no way you can cut it in two with chopsticks. I feel sure the number of people who've ever asked for a knife in a sushi bar is zero. We just open wide and try to chew gracefully, lips closed.

If I've missed a technique, in my many years of enjoying sushi, let me know.

But that's a quibble, irrelevant to the joys of eating raw fish wrapped in sticky rice. The Goblin is a welcome anomaly on the Bagley Strip, otherwise made up solely of Mexican spots. It has sushi, nigiri, simple poke bowls, and a variety of Asian alcohols.

The Stott is very pricy for Metro Detroit wealthy upper-middle class burbs such as Farmington Hills can only match with their most expensive units. It compares with wealthy urban centers such as Ann Arbor, Northville & Birmingham but we have been seeing the most expensive units being sold in the region in downtown such as Book-Cadillac penthouse condos.

Detroit’s got some luck with timing before the previous administrations trade wars began Detroit was being named the number 1 destination to visit in the us and a high rise boom was setting up in downtown and midtown. The top neighborhoods outside of greater downtown were getting development that 10 years before would only be seen in midtown and the core was about to start throwing up skyscrapers left and right.

There are a number of very significant projects moving forward but to a degree it seems like investors are collectively holding their breath not wanting for the light at the end of the tunnel with economy and pandemic. Fortunately lessons were learned from the great mistake of the 70s when the Ren Cen drew in a high portion of the class a office space leaving the rest of downtown struggling. The abysmal occupancy numbers pushed many recently renovated deco towers to the brink.

On the brightside the fundamentals are still in place for the boom to return back in full force once the economy improves. The trade war tempered the roaring auto & high tech industries many of which are at least partially interlinked. Detroit has one of the highest concentrations of STEM workers in the us and in terms of percentage and raw numbers the consolidation of the region’s high tech industry aka automation ally downtown lead the the current boom.

State Fair transit center proposal would reuse Dairy Cattle Building, demo Coliseum

Quote:
The proposed new transit center at the old Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit would repurpose the historic Dairy Cattle Building as its central feature but see the demolition of most of another key building at the site, the Coliseum, according to proposals unveiled Thursday.

The proposal for a new transit center, which would replace the nearby existing — and what many users describe as a woefully inadequate — bus transfer site, came about as part of the plan to bring an Amazon Distribution Center to the area.

Conceptual images of the site near Woodward and 8 Mile, presented during a Detroit Department of Transportation Zoom meeting to provide an update on the project, showed buses pulling through the center of a repurposed Dairy Cattle Building to pick up and drop off passengers, with an atmosphere marked by lots of open space, the structure’s tall ceiling and windows near the top to let in natural light.

Additional space would be included inside the building for a ticketing office, waiting area, bathrooms, leasable sections, bicycle storage, a historical display area, police office and space for Detroit Department of Transportation and Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation staff.

Mixed new hmm I like the concept and am definitely glad to see such a positive reuse coming to the site after the let down of losing the mixed use development to a huge amazon facility. There’s still room for more development but after all the time and consultation that went into the former proposal Amazon felt like a let down.

This feels like a bit of a consolation prize the preservation of a historic structure for such a good use but the Coliseum has so much history not just Motown that we all know and love but Detroit Rock City too. MC5 and the whole Detroit proto-punk - garage rock scene has roots there.

Just take look at the set list from 66’ it’s a who’s who of some of the greatest musicians of all time the The Yardbirds, Velvet Underground, The Stooges and that’s just 66. 1962 is another amazing summer Marvin Gay, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes & The Miracles. I know it’s a hard reuse for anything other than its original function but goddamn man that’s a piece of the heat and soul of Detroit right there.

Set list 62 - beginning of 66

Here’s what I came here to do before my rant got a dopeass nighttime pic of the Book from the Opera House parking garage .. does help sooth my wounded soul a bit. Idk if this has been posted before somewhere a while ago but damnit a fine piece of imagery such as this deserves the light of day well so to speak
