Gov. Moore announces plan to bring back Baltimore transit project

"ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Gov. Wes Moore emphatically pledged Thursday to get an east-west transit project back on track in Baltimore, nearly eight years after his predecessor pulled the plug on the Red Line.

Moore, who campaigned on restarting the project to help better connect the city's residents to jobs, made the announcement during a news conference at a MARC train station in west Baltimore with federal, state and local officials.

“To everyone who’s out there who’s been waiting and waiting, I say to you this: This is going to happen," Moore said..."

Even a remote chance this could be a Metro Subway line instead of LRT? The downtown tunnel is such an investment to only be used by one line. The original rapid rail plan envisioned 6 lines passing through a central loop.

All east-west LRT or RST transit studies will uses the current Green line downtown tunnel

"About 200 apartments, mostly one-bedroom units and some two-bedroom units, with about 9,000 square feet of amenity space and terraces and one parking space per unit.
About 140,000 square feet of office space in a six-level building, with five levels of offices over one level of retail space. There would be one parking space for every 800 square feet of office space.

About 50,000 square feet of ground-level retail space, in both the new and recycled buildings.

This looks great. With this, the modernization and expansion of Penn Station, and the proposed Red line, there are exciting things proposed and happening in Baltimore.

"The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) has released the technical analysis associated with six Preliminary Alternatives maps made public in late September for the Red Line transit route in Baltimore. Results of the technical analysis support the need for premium transit to improve mobility and access along the east-west corridor.

“The Red Line will have a dramatic, positive impact on communities all along the east-west corridor, and it’s imperative we share ideas and information with residents, officials and stakeholders every step of the way,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “Working together, we can make the Red Line a crown jewel of Maryland’s world-class transportation network. I strongly encourage everyone to participate in making that vision a reality.”

Results of the technical analysis highlight the purpose and need for the project and are organized into a series of “measures of effectiveness” based on topics such as ridership, access, travel time, reliability, cost, time to implement and more. The measures enable the public to evaluate and compare the six proposed alternative maps with respect to mode choice – light rail or bus rapid transit (BRT) – as well as tunneling components and alignment. The measures were developed with feedback from stakeholders and the public during open houses and other public engagement activities held during the summer..."
