Bethesda – Maryland’s best DC suburb?

Last week I spent a few hours in Bethesda, MD. I hadn’t been there since I moved away from DC over 5 years ago and was curious to check out the various developments that have sprung up since then (including Marriott’s new headquarters). It was a beautiful day to be out and about! I also just found out this week that I will likely be relocating back to the DC area in a couple months for a job opportunity, so now I’ll be able to keep a closer eye on future developments in the region (including the under-construction Purple Line light rail). Of note, the photos in the restaurant areas were mostly taken a little before and a little after the core lunch hours, plus it was a Monday, so it looks a little quieter than is typical (though certainly changes related to Covid and increased telework have impacted the area as well). Also, these photos are mostly in random order.

And that’s all from Bethesda. Hope you enjoyed this glimpse of what I consider to be the best of Maryland’s DC suburbs.

Thank you for posting these photos. As far as suburbs go, Bethesda is one of the best-- good transit, excellent schools, a mix of jobs, restaurants, shopping, and housing and it is pretty close to DC.. I haven't been to Bethesda in more than three years, so these photos are nice to see, especially the photos of the Purple Line construction.

Will this be a Purple Line station?

Great photos!

Out of curiosity, how do you pronounce Bethesda?

I have little experience with East Coast suburbs but this one looks amazingly pleasant.

Such a fine city, I like those outdoor chair sets with nice open views towards the building clusters.

The whole Bethesda-Chevy Chase-Friendship Heights area is so unbelievably charming. One of the best suburban areas in the country, not just the DC area, imo.

It's not the station itself because it will be located underground, but it's related to the construction of the station. You had good timing with your question, which the purple line twitter feed happened to address this week when it tweeted some photos of this same structure.

"The temporary structure you see on Elm Street in Bethesda houses our gantry crane. In a few days crews will resume excavation to 130 feet below the surface without using a huge tower crane."

That looks fantastic. DC seems to have the best secondary cores in the country overall.

Based on the photos I would say it is one of the country's best suburbs.

It’s exciting to see the Purple Line under construction - such a necessary suburban metro connection!

You would be correct. The DC region is fortunate to have some really excellent suburbs that are served by transit.
