Another one for London, this time "old east" rather than downtown. First one is a small remaining collection of older homes in various states of disrepair (although not "shack" quality yet), and then the second is directly across the road from them.

Not run down shacks, but 3 different eras in London, with the oldest home in the city, from the 1800's on the left, early 20th century homes on the right, late 20th century highrise next door.

That looks pretty organized compared to a Brazilian favela.

We rented a U-Haul cube yesterday and I learned something from it that checks several boxes:

Building a Wooden Shack aircraft carrier on a landlocked Alberta lake. (I'm not making any of this up!)

It's actually somewhat tempting to start to buy and flip Vancouver West End houses (one at a time, making sure I receive my personal mail there for at least 366 days before selling to a BCML for a lot more than I paid for it, rinse and repeat).

(I would like it even more if the rules for capital gains on residential real estate changed though.)

^^ It goes to show how desperate we were to win the war. That was a top secret project back then, which is why you are shocked to hear about it.

To follow Vancouver best practices, don't forget to rent it out as a slum property while having your mail delivered there.

Must have ended up as yet one of many other things to do in Okotoks.

For some reason I've been looking at a lot of streetview Hull lately. I don't know why. I guess I can't reconcile expectation (central, Quebecois area in a majorish metro shouldn't suck) with reality (it sucks). Shacks by the stacks are like a lifestyle out there.

This is the kind of dumpiness I expect from Prairie cities.

Then I got all worried about these new buildings across the river, and wouldn't you know: shacks by stacks by the stack. Plus crack(heads).

Why wouldn't it? Québécois were still mostly hewers of wood and drawers of water within living memory. Basically 50-60 years ago.

Even that area of Ottawa you've shown was primarily proletarian French Canadian as recently as the 1980s.

Hull for sure is well represented in the "shacks by the stacks" criterion. London (Ontario) is no slouch in this dept either.

This is what happens when the city makes the developer set aside land to develop affordable housing, but doesn't mandate that they do it within a specific time frame. Any housing here won't be affordable unless subsidized by a half-million per unit.

PPP is inside the Kentucky Bucket with Stephen Harper enjoying a plain austerity measure turkey and salad sub on whole grain bread. John Baird is outside of frame at the Petroleum Producers Club's annual Jason Kenney gay rodeo and Big Mac buffet.
