NIT-K asked to develop full-fledged sustainable energy department
Quote:
Praising the thrust given by the National Institute of Technology - Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, in the use of green energy, Union Minister for Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday asked the institute to open a full-fledged sustainable energy department.

Speaking at the 20th annual convocation of NIT-K, Mr. Pradhan commended the institute for having a bio-waste recycling plant and also for setting up solar powered charging station for e-bikes in the campus. “With the beginning you have made, I am confident that in a decade the institute will be leading light of energy transition in the country.” Such initiatives are a must at universities for driving green transition, he said.

The country, he said, needs more entrepreneurs and innovators for achieving future ambitions. The country’s strong future lies in the hands of our students, including those in NIT-K, which is located in Karnataka that is the land of Krishnadevaraya and Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

“The State is blessed with rich engineering, architectural and cultural legacy. Students of NIT-K have made their mark globally. Now they also have to aim at becoming job creators,” he said.

Asking the NIT-K to expand beyond engineering and strengthen research and innovation climate, the Union Minister asked the institute to take up the challenge of developing Engineering textbooks in Kannada.

Pointing out that India was ranked 14 in the global innovation index, Mr. Pradhan said the country is poised to play a key role in the future development of humanity and regain its glory as ‘vishwa guru’.

He called upon students to draw inspiration from former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and work towards changing the destiny of the country. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, genome editing and 3D printing, were among the priority areas as the world stares at Industry 4.0, he said.

Earlier, the Minister presented gold medals and awards to nine BTech and 30 postgraduate students. A total of 1,787 candidates received degrees, which includes 126 PhD, 817 post graduate and 844 BTech students.

He also inaugurated the newly constructed buildings of Central Research Facility and School of Interdisciplinary Studies. He also laid the foundation stone for the construction of “Block D” lecture hall complex.

Why Mangalore is emerging as hotspot for green hydrogen projects
Quote:
Many of the proposals received by Karnataka pertain to setting up electrolyser plants in the Mangalore region and storing the hydrogen produced in the form of ammonia. This is because storing hydrogen, which is the lightest element, as liquid or gas requires high pressure and extremely low temperatures. Liquid ammonia can be stored at -33°C.

“All these projects that have come are looking at exporting hydrogen,” said Gunjan Krishna, Karnataka’s commissioner for industrial development, at a recent press conference. Water availability and the presence of a port in Mangalore makes it a preferred location for these plants, explains Doddabasavaraju, managing director of Karnataka Udyog Mitra, the single-window agency for industrial project approvals. Besides, the added attraction is that about 220 acres of land and infrastructure is available under the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ).

Meeting the land requirement for a cluster, however, will be a challenge given that the individual plant proposals are in the range of 200-300 acres each. Hence, the new projects are currently looking at the minimum requirement of 80-100 acres to establish a plant and start operations, says Doddabasavaraju.

Quote:
These worms have been found in the coastal areas of Mangaluru, clinging to the rocks of Ullala and Suratkal shores. While the system appears to withstand the impact of the waves, more scientific research is needed to determine whether these worms might completely invade the rocks of the area or destabilize the surrounding sand. Nonetheless, Sabellaria provides a promising solution to coastal erosion and a new dimension to the study of marine life.

Here is an interesting report on green hydrogen production issues.

Water is needed for green hydrogen production, but concerns remain about its availability
Quote:
A report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) claims that it needs nine litres of water for every kilogram of green hydrogen produced. Freshwater access is a concern in water-stressed areas for producing green hydrogen, the report said. Estimates claim that if we use solar energy as an electricity source for electrolysis, then the total water requirement for the energy source and water needed for electrolysis will come to around 32 kgs of water to produce each kg of green hydrogen, whereas if we use wind energy the cumulative water requirement for per kg of green hydrogen comes at 22 kgs of water. On the other hand, the same estimates claim that when natural gas is used to produce hydrogen (grey hydrogen), it takes 22 kg of water to make one kg of hydrogen.
Quote:
“We have estimated that if we aim to produce 5 MMT of green hydrogen annually, we will need 90 Gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy if we use demineralised water or seawater directly. But if we consider water treatment, the energy needed to produce the same amount of green hydrogen can reach 125 GW. So, treatment of water will lead to a need for extra energy and thus also the extra cost of production,” Saraswat said.
Wonder whether Green Hydrogen units coming up in Mangaluru use fresh water itself!

1MWp solar farm off M’luru coast soon
Quote:
Mangaluru: The coastal waters will soon generate solar power as a France-based company is all set to come up with an offshore solar farm, about 10 nautical miles off Surathkal light house. The 1MWp offshore pilot project solar farm invested by a France based company, through its India-based subsidiary SolarinBlue Energy, will supply power to MESCOM.

According to Kapil Sharma, co-founder, SolarinBlue, it has already secured all necessary permission from local bodies, Union government and others. Sharma says if all goes well, the solar farm work will start from first quarter of 2024. “The site is located about 10 nautical miles from the shore, at 19m depth for a total surface area of 200m x 200m. The project will help decarbonize electricity generation for more than 1.5GWh per year, the equivalent of the electricity consumption of more than 7,000 households,” he said.

Sharma said the firm had conducted their survey across India and they first zeroed in on Kerala, but finally decided on Mangaluru. “First reason was that sea-bed here is apt for the project and solar farm can be anchored well. Secondly, government policies and other aspects,” he said. The firm has conducted all feasibility tests. Sharma added that once the pilot project is implemented, it will start solar power generation from 45kw power generation and scale upto 1MWp. “The project in the near future aims to provide large employment opportunities especially to those from fishermen community,” said Sharma.
So now, the government can plan for sea-based electricity for Green Hydrogen & Ammonia production!

Now, even for Subsea Data Centers electricity can be supplied from near by sea-based power plant. Hope that Adani will plan for Subsea Data Centers for Data Park at Yellur.

I wonder whether there could be combined solar+wave or wind+wave energy to electricity converters which could be mounted on single installation on sea! And then ocean current as third addition! ref: net-zero data centre

ONGC plans to invest Rs 1 lakh crore by 2030 to boost petchem capacity 2
Quote:
ONGC's plan is part of the larger government thrust to help India emerge as a major petrochemical hub in the world. ONGC's plans are likely to be implemented by its subsidiary Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) and its joint venture ONGC Petro additions Ltd (OPaL), people cited above said. Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL), ONGC's other subsidiary, has separate petrochemical plans.

By 2030, the combined petrochemicals capacity of MRPL and OPaL is targeted to more than double to 8 million metric tonnes per annum, the people cited above said. Under the expansion plan, two mega projects, one each on the east and the west coast, will be set up, they said. The facilities will either directly use crude to produce chemicals or take other feedstocks. ONGC can also use the crude it produces in the country as feedstock for its crude-to-chemical facility.

Though a show cause notice was issued to the state works department, no follow up action was taken by Karnataka State Coastal Zone Management Authority, the CAG said in its report after verifying the existence of the road.

The Expert Appraisal Committee recommended clearing a hotel project in Mangalore without the hotel fulfilling its obligation of shifting the parking area beyond the no development zone of 200 m from the high tide line of Gurupur river.

Out of the 12 Urban Local Bodies, only Mangalore City Corporation had a sewage network to cover 100 per cent of its area with four treatment plants. The City Municipal Council of Udupi, Karwar and Bhatkal had a partial sewerage network that catered to only 25 per cent, 14 per cent and 25 per cent area respectively.

The remaining eight cities – Ullal, Mulki, Kuap, Kundapura, Saligrama, Honnaver, Kumta and Ankola depend on either individual septic tanks or soak-pits to treat sewage. More than 7.5 million litres of untreated sewage water is discharged daily into the sea, the CAG noted, quoting a Karnataka State Pollution Control Board report.

2023 Assembly Election - Mangaluru Manifesto

We have 10 acre film city as an additional promise for this election by a political party.

IT Park is unrealized promise for last 20 years. Only one political party is promising it now. I think Sports Village is an old promise.

Now, IT Hub for Surathkal!

The manifesto released by Dr Bharath Shetty consists of constructing Hindu Bhavan and providing auditorium for the weddings of poor people at low cost, cold storage for fishermen, construction of IT hub, AYUSH forest, shelter for nomad cattle, water sport and food stalls at sea shore. The manifesto also speaks about stress on religious and cultural tourism, priority for development and nationalism and others.

Hope Mangaluru selecting opposition party candidates as MLAs will not be a hindrance for IT growth here. Infact, if politicians start investing their dirty money in real estate here then there is better chance of IT growth here. Let us wait & find out effect on IT Park projects like Westline Cubix, Northernsky The Blend, Goldfinch Kulur.

Subsea Cloud

For Mangaluru, whether any of political party is ready to include Subsea Cloud Park in their Loksabha Election 2024 Manifesto?

Here are quotes from my earlier posts on subsea datacenters & relevant posts on IT based industrial scenario.

If IT offices are also 29 floors then jobs capacity could be even 15,000.

Wonder whether they are trying for SEZ status!

I think Mangalore Internet City, BA Group Thumbe Township, Mohtisham Kannur Township, Goldfinch City together should generate at least 50,000 IT jobs. And Mudipu SEZ, GanjiMatt EPIP, Mangalore Multiproduct SEZ should also generate another 50,000 IT jobs.

I think Mangalore is also suited well for evolving cutting edge technology of subsea or underwater datacenters (2) as it is protected by Karwar Naval base and far way from reach of hostile countries or their naval/air bases. If this is materilized then lot more jobs can be generated in data center services including banking.

IT SEZ in Mangaluru and EPIP in DK

I think it is about existing Mudipu IT SEZ & Ganjimatt EPIP. Nothing new.

Mangaluru MP demands Union IT Minister for IT Park

Mangaluru MP should not forget about election promise of IT Park. He, Mohandas Pai, KV Kamath etc should together visit Ministry of Information Technology and finalize the project. Also demand for 'Pilot project of Underwater Data Center' at Mangalore.

Quote:
Google is also planning to install data centers on water. Earlier this year, Google patented ships with kites. Google plans to install data centers on these ships. Check this video that shows how these ships work.

Microsoft’s underwater data centers are designed to promote marine life. In fact, Microsoft calls them “artificial reef datacenters”.

It is worth noting that artificial reefs can reduce sea erosion. And help in Marine Pharmacognosy.

Let us hope that land will go to a company which is really interested in constructing a IT SEZ.

So, land meant for IT are getting diverted to other purposes.

Managalore will not have IT Park but will have Common Instrumental Centre

When the parched city already have IT Park why Mangalore should not have one? Is coast is only for stealing water, spoiling with petrochemical, thermal power and desalination plants? What Mangalore MP doing against his election promise of IT Park?

Mangalore to be declared India’s first startup district
Quote:
Earlier efforts to start IT centres in Mangalore were not very successful as there were several issues at the local level. Mangalore South MLA JR Lobo said there were issues with the urban development department and the city municipal corporation.

“Every time an IT company proposes a shift to the tier-II city or an NRI comes up with an idea of giving back to their home town, these projects are welcomed with great fanfare but are never sanctioned as per their original plans. As a result, they are stuck due to bureaucratic hurdles,” he said.

To address these problems specific to the industry, the lawmaker, who is keen to promote the district, has called all stakeholders on to a common platform next month.

Shouldn't he leave it for others to get it realized. And better not talk about Udupi MP.

Here are some extracts from my earlier post

...

Anyway, let me summarize all things I mentioned so far here for making Mangaluru a mega medical/health city and medical/wellness/health tourism city.
  • Declare Mangaluru, Udupi, Bantwal taluks as Medical Investment Region (or Dental & Cosmetics Investment Region) consisting of special economic zones for health cities and medical products manufacturing. This region should also support startups in biodental, biocosmetic and other biomedical/biomimetic engineering domains.
  • Following National Laboratories
    • ...
    • Subsea Data Centre for storing Health Informations (we have to also check whether Subsea Data Centre can facilitate growth of marine medicinal organisms)
      ...

If Subsea Data Centre is feasible near Mangalore then it would be great!

That means Mangaluru & Udupi need more seats. So, 'Instrumentation Incubator' & 'IT Park' are welcome. And hope, in near future, Mangaluru will even have cheaper 'Subsea Data Center' for startups requiring them.

On why Mangaluru has an edge over Bengaluru, he said, Mangaluru’s advantange is ease of working, proximity and commuting time is less in Mangaluru. Quality of Life Index is high here. The population is literate. “This can be ascertained through the GST registration and migration figures. When Karnataka’s average was 70 per cent, on June 15 the registration for GST and migration in Dakshina Kananda revenue district including Udupi was 92 per cent, indicating that we are 22 per cent above the state average. People are business savy. There are about 1.2 lakh registered dealers in the revenue district. When it comes to compliance rating, the district enjoys a top position. The revenue and tax collection rates are also high,” KCCI president said.
Those are immediate benefits, in future they (including labour cost) may or may not be there as city expands, wages get normalized. Now there may be a scenario of IT/ITES companies searching for more economical destinations as global economy is receding 1. If we can convince that shifting to coastal region will also end up in long term benefits who knows industries may start shifting.

Permanent benefits to IT/BT will come in the form of emerging technologies like SWAC (savings in air conditioning cost), subsea data centre (savings in energy for cooling data centre) etc. In addition all industries (irrespective of whether IT/BT or not) or employees will benefit from water cost, power transmission cost, water transportation etc. (I don't know whether the parched city users pay any extra amount to cover power transmission cost compared to cities/regions which are source of power production).

...

Even MSEZ can try to have about 40 acres IT/BT SWAC city within its premises. Even incomplete Raheja Waterfront is suitable for SWAC and there are many more such sites near sea. Now there is also a new trend to come up with community based IT/BT/Startup townships, that could also be a SWAC township. Even NIT-K can think of converting itself into a SWAC township. Having said that nobody can stop us from planning for SWAC as a part of area based development under smart city project itself. , our politicians could not get even allocation/reallocation of Rs 5 crore subsidy for terrace/indoor gardening under smart city project!

Cold seawater is even used for refrigeration. All kinds of cold storage facilities can use cold seawater after exchange with fresh water (or directly for fish cold storage facilities?).

Remnant temperature of cold freshwater after usage for airconditioning of buildings can be used for either cooling of agricultural polyhouses or cooling of waterbodies like lakes (cooling lakes will also decrease evaporational loss) as mentioned in the link Curaçao Airport - Seawater Air Conditioning project. So, it could be a better idea to incorporate urban agriculture in a few of proposed cluster port cities along with SWAC. We can also explore the possibile usage of seawater greenhouse though it is designed for arid climate & may increase salinity of sea due to release of more saline water to sea.

As I posted earlier for freshwater small coastal reservoirs of average height of 3.5 meters can be filled by rainwater falling on sea itself. (‘Rainfall to increase over next 100 years’ - although truth of simulation depends upon parameters considered result means quick evacuation of terrace water to reservoir suggested earlier is useful to avoid floods). Even pipeline can be laid to store additional flow after rainy season as there is flow till March in rivers like Netravati. Talapady, Someshwar, Tannirbhavi, Kulai, Surathkl, Mulki, Padubidri, Kapu etc are ideal locations to have SWAC cities.

Unless India decreases its IT/BT development cost utilizing things like SWAC other countries may snatch away future business from India. Mauritius has already many Data Centers cooled by SWAC and ICT industry of Mauritius 2 is doing well. The SWAC usage in cities of developed countries like Honolulu 1, Singapore 1, Copenhagen 1 or a city of any of Gulf countries may not mean immediate threat but large developing thirdworld countries with cheap labour opting for this and building their own IT abilities may be a great threat to Indian IT industry.

The research paper here talks about worldwide potential of SWAC - Technical potential and cost estimates for seawater air conditioning 2 3.

Wonder whether installing Ocean Energy - Wave Power Station of Wells turbine 2 3 4 type placed adjacent to each other has potential to decrease sea erosion by diverting away erosional energy of waves into useful electrical energy though their efficiency is less. What we may need is a wall (a marine drive?) of wave energy stations of this kind to act against erosion. This kind of turbine seems to be safe for marine life as no water comes in contact with turbine blades. Sand deposition may be a issue to be addressed. Tidal levels & raise in sealevel due to climate change has also be addressed. Hope some college students will come up with demonstrable model of this type of wave energy generator soon. The strength of waves hitting shore can also be reduced by other types of turbines 1 2 3 near shore. And as I posted earlier there is also high possibility of using Ocean Thermal Energy 2 3 as ocean surface temperature at this region is supposed to be high 1 (though we proved risk of flood is low compared to many other cities of India & the world) though this may not remedy sea erosion as facilities are more than 3 km offshore.

The link - 6 - already listed above talks about 'cold aquaculture' 2 using nutrient rich deepsea cold water and 'cold agriculture' or 'chilled-soil agriculture' and agriculture by chilled-water cooling of polyhouse/coolinghouse using remnant temperature of cold water after usage for a/c of buildings or OTEC plants. Also climate control is also a good possibility to explore but has to be done carefully with full knowledge of consequences. If temperature of sea near shore is decreased artificially like this than thousands of fishermen will be benefited due to increased flora & fauna but we have to address salinity.

Karnad Industrial Area is about 1,500 meters away from seashore. To explore feasibility of Sea Water Airconditioning (SWAC) site has to be as near to sea as possible but we have to abide by CRZ rules. What we need is a bold begining to start SWAC trend as initial expenditure will be high like any other green building though operational savings are high. What are the possibility of SWAC resort in Tannirbhavi? Whether agreement between IGBC and MSCL can be extended to SWAC also assuming that IGBC has enough knowledge on SWAC and urban agriculture (if remnant temperature of water after airconditioning of buildings should be used for urban farming). Vacant land of Padubidri SEZ could also be explored for SWAC IT/BT. Fishermen may object for laying pipeline for that possibility of cold aquaculture has to be explored. Probable SWAC can be presented as a selling point in Mangaluru Investors Summit.

Summa: Preparations are going on for building IT Park in 40% of 4 acres land near AJ Medical College, Derebail to generate more than 2,000 jobs and remaining 60% of land will be used for residence and other infrastructure development to facilitate work from home concept.

Good that the government has opted for 'Integrated IT Park' (by definition IT Park itself is a cluster; rather than 'work from home' Integrated IT Park will support 'walk to work'; better one is 'work from anywhere'). In the next stage, once IT Park is realized by any chance, we can go for a bigger 'Integrated IT Township' with SWAC facility. We can even plan for SWAC Data Centres 1 or related ones like floating data centres 1 or subsea data centres 1. In the mean time, our educational institutes can start teaching these types of data centres to relevant students.

Summa: Coastal Karnataka districts are expecting economic boom through blue economy. Blue economy policy is expected to give boost to ocean environment through sustainable exploitation of ocean assets covering areas like water transportation, marine tourism, marine biotechnology, seawater desalination plants, offshore oil & gas exploration, coastal roads, deepsea fisheries, cage culture, seaweed farming, offshore wind power plants, ship building & repair, waste management, marine biodiversity.

What about deep sea mining for minerals explored through GSI through environmentally sustainable technologies, SWAC, underwater data centres? Any engineering college working on underwater drones? I think once ICGA becomes functional it may hold underwater drone 2 competitions for students.

Mangaluru having stable seabed is definitely a help towards net-zero data centre! 1 2
Currently Nxtra has an edge datacenter in Mangaluru as per the news (I don't know its address).

By the way Subsea Cloud 2 is a company name. But, I have used "Subsea Cloud Park" to mean a cluster of net-zero underwater datacenters with captive power facilities like offshore wind/solar farms by different companies.

So far we have seen that Mangaluru seabed is stable hence good for building net-zero datacenters. Still I have a doubt on whether sea temperature 1 & ocean current is suitable enough for building datacenters here.

For proposed Adani Data Park at Yellur, Udupi one major threat is the objection by Karnataka government to handing over Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) to Adani Group. Note that these project proposals (Data Park + Adani University) by Adani are associated with the future growth of MIA. We can only guess without proof against anybody that the reasons for the objection as (1) money extortion from the group (political mafia want to make quick money when in power) (2) the pressure from real estate mafia *1 of the monstrous city not to allow the growth of probable subsea datacenters hence IT growth in the coastal regions of Karnataka which may result in hindrance to future IT growth in the monstrous city because of economical unviability hence hindrance to real estate mafia business. But I doubt whether legally they can nullify the agreement with the Adani group on MIA. By the way, why objection only on MIA? Why not on privatization of the montrous city airport? (*1. politicians may argue that real estate mafia is present in Mangaluru also but we know that power & influence of mafia here is negligible compared to the monstrous city real estate mafia).

Okay. The promise of IT Park made in I think 2014 Loksabha Election manifesto is not yet fulfilled hence "Subsea Cloud Park" would be more than an ambitious dream. Still nothing wrong in putting people into dreams during election times!

Rs 4.7 lakh crore proposals from GIM 2022 realised

But the government has not followed up on investment proposals worth Rs 1 lakh crore from the Adani Group. Sources suggest that given the “politically sensitive” climate, the industries department is unlikely to “push” for commitments from the group.

“Had it been any other company, we may have followed upsince it is a big chunk,” said an official. The officials said the group was welcome to present its investment proposals on its own. It is said Adani Group’s proposals are mostly to expand areas of existing businesses like the Udupi thermal power plant and operations and management of Mangaluru International Airport.

It is clear from the following news article that it is not programmes like "Beyond the Monstrous Cities" which are forcing IT industries to move towards tier-II/III cities but economical viability & other reasons. It is not the politicalmafia or bureaucracymafia but awareness of NRI IT entrepreneurs which is driving IT growth in tier-II/III cities.
