Construction Begins Underneath The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center, World Trade Center

Quote:
The photos come from Earthcam’s World Trade Center station, which has offered excellent updates on the gradual transformation of the site. Steel plating began arriving a few weeks ago, and construction has now begun, with the first columns rising for the Vehicle Security Center.

The diagram of the site shows the location of the VSC in relation to the Performing Arts Center, and makes obvious why the former must be finished before the latter can start to rise.

Joshua Prince-Ramus of REX is designing the project, which will be the crowning cultural centerpiece of the new World Trade Center complex. There will be three theaters within the project, each containing seating for 499, 250, and 99 people, respectively.

Completion is expected by 2020, and the actual Performing Arts Center should begin construction in another year or so.

Still nothing happening here.
Still a hole in the ground, 16 years after 9/11.

Nothing happening... except for the new steel that's been added (admittedly slowly) over the last couple months.

That's not totally fair, I mean it was a PATH station entrance until last year when they demo'd it, right?

If you're keeping score last month they finally finished the entry on the east side of 1 wtc. (Still incomplete after all these years). For the last few years there's been exposed steel and insulation where that portal should have been. Hopefully this means they've started to make the underground connections on the vsc.

As a side note on 1wtc (asking here since these forums get more traffic)- does anyone know what's going on with the new openings at the top of 1 wtc- on each of the cardinal elevations there's 2 removed windows near the top, not sure if these are for new mechanical vents or are temporary but they detract from the look of the building.

Well, as few seem to realise, the VSC is what is being built right now, not the PAC. The PAC will sit atop the VSC just as 7WTC sits atop a ConEd station, just as the original one had.

The permanent window-washing mechanisms are broken, so rather than allow dirt to accumulate on the windows and incur the wrath of Condé Nast, they knocked out two windows on each side from which they're hanging the window-washing platforms.

Work Appears To Stall for World Trade Center’s Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center
By: Nikolai Fedak 8:00 am on December 22, 2017

Back in August, YIMBY reported on apparent progress on the site of the Vehicle Security Center and future Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center, on the site of the old temporary PATH Station.
Unfortunately, while steel began to rise as summer turned to fall and reached street-level by November, December has seemingly brought a freeze to the pace of progress.

I believe that Conde Nast did sue Durst over window washing fees. The mechanisms broke in 2014 and wont be fixed until 2018. But hey what's one more failure after everything else Durst has done wrong?

You made a lot of weather puns. I'm willing to bet it's because of that.

9/11 Memorial Glade

Quote:
Over the weekend, the monoliths were lifted into place at the 9/11 Memorial Glade, a new section of the memorial honoring those who worked on the post-9/11 recovery efforts and others who have died or been affected by 9/11-related illnesses. Designed by Michael Arad, designer of the Reflecting Absence memorial and partner at Handel Architects, and Peter Walker, the Memorial Glade features six monoliths fabricated with stone from a Vermont quarry and weighing up to 17 tons each. The site has been reinforced with high density styrofoam, concrete, and steel rebar to support the monoliths which sit atop the underground portion of the memorial 70 feet below. Before the opening on May 30, steel from the original World Trade Center site will be incorporated into grooves that mark each of the monoliths and a cobblestone path through the site will be installed.

Cuomo seeks donors to finance long-stalled shrine at WTC

Quote:
The stalled re-construction of a Greek Orthodox church at Ground Zero is getting a second wind — this time from Gov. Cuomo.

The governor has lobbied for seven donors to step up and help finance the reconstruction of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox National Shrine, which was destroyed in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the New York Post reported.

“He wants the church finished,” said John Catsimatidis, Red Apple Group founder and one of the donors, to the outlet. Cuomo also hopes Democratic donor Dennis Mehiel and Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas join the group, according to the paper’s sources. (Earlier this spring, Catsimatidis also got an invite to Cuomo’s quiet fundraiser.)

A spokesperson for Cuomo said that the governor contacted the Port Authority, which owns the land and leases it to the church for $1 a year, and “is trying to help the project that has been stalled for years,” according to the Post.

When the design by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava was announced in 2013, the structure, intended to glow at night, was supposed to cost $20 million. That rose to $35 million in 2015, at the time of the ground-breaking, and has only ballooned since.

Rule #1 for any developer or urban planner - never get involved with the Church.

I see a giant rib cage.

Calatrava is a dummy.
