Wow! Lots of pictures. Thanks! There's a lot of neat things going on.

I don't hear much news there; will the Hard Rock building impact any Canal St. parades?

Yes. Endymion will now turn left onto Loyola from Canal and then left onto Julia to the convention center. The Superdome is being renovated, so the extravaganza will be in the convention center this year. Zulu will also change routes, and will now turn left onto Julia and then right on Loyola. That will take them over to Basin and back to the traditional route to Zulu headquarters on Broad.

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE PROJECTS UNDERWAY ACROSS THE CITY

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE PROJECTS UNDERWAY ACROSS THE CITY
The Department of Public Works (DPW) is continuing to make infrastructure improvements across the city. DPW maintenance contractor Hard Rock Construction recently began short-term maintenance projects: four on the West Bank, one in New Orleans East and one in the Downtown Development District.

West Bank

Work has been completed in the 4200 block of Herschel Drive. Improvements include new concrete and curbs, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps, as well as street width and length of driveways adjustments.

On Tullis Drive, new concrete panels are being installed in the 6900-7000 blocks. The road is temporarily closed between Lancaster Street and Blair Street, but the project is expected to be complete by in February.

On General Meyer Avenue between Sullen Place and Bennett Street, crews are installing new concrete panels to help improve traffic flow. The $1.25M project will take approximately two months to complete, weather permitting.

Between General De Gaulle Drive and Pace Boulevard on Wall Boulevard, crews will make joint replacements and replace concrete panels for a future bike path. The $1.25M project began in January will take approximately two months to complete, weather permitting.

New Orleans East

In response to localized flooding on Murano Road, a new drainage line is being installed in the 4300-4600 blocks. The project is expected to be complete next month.

Downtown Development District

In response to localized flooding on Union Street, a combination of green and gray infrastructure will be constructed between St. Charles Avenue and Carondelet Street. The project includes a new upsized drainage with a pervious (allows water to move through) concrete parking lane as well as new sidewalks. Work will be complete next month.

riapak is coming to New Orleans East!

Iriapak’s investment will bring an international company to the city, create up to 25 high-quality jobs, and continue the drumbeat of investment in the East and in the Regional Business Park, which has seen the recent opening of Crescent Crown and Dixie Brewery. The incentive comes with the much-needed provision that living-wage jobs will be created that pay at least $18 an hour for our residents.

Auditorium Complex Renovation
NOMA ANNOUNCES AUDITORIUM COMPLEX RENOVATION
Museum Committed to Advancing Role as Nexus for Arts in New Orleans
January 29, 2020

NEW ORLEANS, LA – In its mission to serve as a multi-faceted cultural convener for all audiences, the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) began construction on renovations to its auditorium complex in early January of 2020.

NOMA is committed to offering innovative experiences for learning and interpretation; and uniting, inspiring, and engaging diverse communities and cultures. Key to NOMA’s ability to fully realize this ambition is a renovation of the museum auditorium. The auditorium complex renovation will create a flat-floored, modern space with surround sound and theatrical lighting. Flexible and contemporary, the space will serve in multiple capacities, from theater in the round to a banquet space, lecture hall, and more. The renovation will allow for seating for up to 360 people, providing NOMA with a state-of-the-art platform for interdisciplinary arts experiences. It will also connect the current auditorium more effectively with adjacent spaces.

“As New Orleans’ oldest fine arts institution, we are dedicated to inspiring the love for arts in our community,” said Susan Taylor, Montine McDaniel Freeman Director of NOMA. “A flexible, contemporary auditorium will create a space for celebration of the visual and performing arts, and allow the museum to expand our diverse offerings.”

Built in the 1970s, the existing auditorium has 220 seats, a shallow rake, no backstage, outdated technology, and a projection booth that is difficult to access. However, its position adjacent to NOMA’s Great Hall and café courtyard make it perfectly positioned to support a range of programs and events, including films, lectures, symposia, broadcast events, festivals, music, dance and other performance events and special commemorations. The auditorium complex renovation will also enable NOMA to expand the museum’s current community partnerships, as well as create opportunity for new partnerships, advancing the museum’s position as a nexus for the arts in New Orleans.

The auditorium complex renovation will also include a renovation to Café NOMA, which is operated by long-term NOMA partner Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group.

5022 Bienville St., at the intersection with City Park Avenue.

Here, celebrity chef Aaron Sanchez and his partners in the downtown restaurant Johnny Sanchez — Miles Landrem and Drew Mire — intend to open a casual neighborhood-style restaurant. Those plans were first announced last year. Landrem, the chef at Johnny Sanchez, said they are indeed still moving forward, though they are not yet ready to discuss the concept.

Hard Rock Demo Update:

Listening to the Mayors update yesterday at the groundbreaking of the Freret Streets Project. Basic points I thought worth mentioning:

-City Councils shenanigans caused some insurers to back out as she warned would happen

- However, despite that they still anticipate demo in mid- late march.

- following demolition .. 90 days to remove every last piece of debris from the entire site.
- she did also mention that progress of debris removal will be noticeable almost immediately and that the footprint of the operation will shrink considerably and that for most of the 90 days the operation will look more like a construction site and that the streets save for iberville will be back open much sooner.

Also worth mentioning that streetcar service has returned to loyola ave too.. so thats nice to see.. .looks like we are getting to the homestretch of getting passed this issue and can focus on rebuilding the block as well as holding people accountable for what went wrong

So the ultimate question is: What will happen after the demo?
Will Hard Rock still be built?
Something else?
Nothing bc it's taboo?

DYING to know!

Something will be built , but you can be assured it wont be that building deign or anything close to it or a Hard Rock Hotel. Also, dont forget because of this the footprint will be a lot larger than before because of the demo of three adjoining buildings.

I would expect to see another mixed-use project announced there, but it won't be nearly as tall as the Hard Rock Hotel was given the larger footprint to work with now. That corner is a prime piece of real estate, so it won't stay empty for long.

Me personally would rather see a Odeon type development there instead bc like you said it’s prime real estate and building some short would be a waste in my opinion

Speaking of Punch Bowl.

Letter to editor: Bowling, co-living development has no place in New Orleans neighborhood

My favorite parts;
“We are the ones that are paying the property taxes and trying to create a quality of life wherein we can live and work in peace, without having to constantly dodge bars and festivals, unruly short-term renters and council members.”

“And why does affordable housing have to be placed on one of the most expensive pieces of property in downtown New Orleans?”

Oh god i dont even know where to start with that letter. The entire lafayette square neighborhood is basically 10 people. I should create my own neighborhood org for where i live and demand everyone kiss my ass too. Basically what they have done! So glad people are telling that group to get lost now!

If i had to guess and this is just a guess.. id suspect whatever is built will look much more like the rest of that block on canal along the streets and in the middle of the block will be the larger buidling and i think you are right it wont be as tall either because of the larger footprint.. overall id expect a much better looking building and project

I know that a new building on the Hard Rock site will require its own construction plans, measurements, etc. Would they be able to use any of the footings that were put in place for the hotel? Seems like that could be an attractive savings if possible.
