IRS Data: Congressional Districts by Number of Returns Filed with $500,000+ Income

I wonder why they have $500,000+ for congressional district data but not county data, which only goes to $200,000+

Anyhow, if you should be so inclined, please click on the link below to the IRS website to check my work. Corrections are appreciated.

This is for tax year 2018, latest data available at this time.

I was like, wait what? Scranton (Cartright) has more high income households than the Philadelphia suburbs?

It turns out no. PA-04 is Madeline Dean's district and includes roughly a 3rd of the Main Line. The other portions are in Christie Houlahan (PA-05) and Mary Gay Scanlon's (PA-03) districts, both of which are also on the list.

This list basically confirms that all of the country's rich people live in essentially 15 states: CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, WA

Honorable mention to NC with 2 districts.

Are you filtering out districts with less than 5,000 returns of +$500k?

You better put Wyoming on that list. It's all one giant Congressional District with a lot of low income people to bring down the average but Teton County (Jackson) is loaded with really rich folks. Several other Rocky Mountain states are similar with little enclaves of super-rich submerged in the low-density sea of middle class.

Yeah, not sure how many claim Teton County as a primary residence though (One of my wife's college roommates is from Jackson. Love it when we get to visit her family!).

As a part-time Teton County resident, I don't actually know a single non-retired person who lives there full time and claims it as their primary residence. Even most of the retired folks I know have another residence elsewhere, though most of them do claim Wyoming as their primary residence for tax reasons.

So while it's certainly wealthy, nearly all of that wealth will show up somewhere else on a list like this.

I actually like Judy Chu; you email her, and she actually emails you back, she doesn't send you a form letter-type of thing. I assume after California's reapportionment/gerrymandering from the recent Census, my girl will no longer be my rep?

Yeah, it's just the thought of an uber rich, old money town like Hillsborough being outclassed by Fremont is cause for a little snickering.

Also, Ted Lieu's hometown of Torrance is nice enough, but the rest of his district that is like the California version of the French Riviera
