I couldn't agree more, which is all the more reason to not put another campground within town limits. The town needs to start looking at year round business opportunities and a redevelopment of the downtown would be a great place to start.

Exactly, I can see big changes in the next 5 to 10 years in Shediac and all good changes, I think also they will become part of the Moncton area in the next few years, well they will become part of Moncton on paper.

I heard a rumor yesterday that when Pizza Delight is rebuilt in Shediac the development will include a Scores Restaurant. If this is the case it is unlikely it will be built in the same location.

I heard that rumor also...

But, for the location, the owners confirmed on Facebook that the location will remain the same...

Sounds like the town council meeting the other night (with regards to the proposed RV campground next to Parlee Beach) was quite lively (complete with police escorts).

Did any of the Shediac forumers attend? I gather it was more than standing room only, with people standing in the hallways straining to hear what was going on. The room was apparently very hot, and there were problems with simultaneous translation leading to short tempers.

In any event, the proposal passed second reading.

I did not attend, I wanted to, but I have my kids this week so I can't make it. From what I understand, one of the investors in the park his wife is on town council also, so even though a good portion of the community is against this development it isn't going to be stopped in council.

I managed to squeeze my fat butt into the room and MonctonRad's account is quite accurate.
I will add that, as one might expect the lack of space, the sweltering room and the wonky headsets for the translation were deemed to be all part of a plot against the anti-campground forces. Maybe they are right on that one, I dunno. Seems odd to host a public meeting in a room that fits about 60 people when you fully expect three times that many, but maybe I'm reading too much into it. Adding to the testiness is how folks don't understand how these meetings operate and expect to be able to interject from peanut gallery several times with a point of order, or a complaint that someone's 'facts' are wrong, or because they like the sound of their voice. They get told they can't come to the mic and speak a second or third time on a matter that has already been addressed, and they get pissed off.
If nothing else, it sure was good theatre.
PS the lady on council who is in a position of conflict of interest declared her conflict from the outset and, I'm told by council members, has never sat in on any of the deliberations on this matter. For what it's worth.
Third and final reading is on the agenda of their April 28 meeting. Which should be equally awesome. :-)

I may have noticed a sign for a new strip mall directly behind the Wilson's gas bar at the corner of Main and Hanington road as I drove by. Can anyone confirm this?

I think that is build to suit sign, the property has been for sale for a while. They recently removed the building that was on the property, I think it was a boarding house in hopes that it would make the property more appealing.

from CBC:

Shediac council approved a bylaw Monday night that gives the go-ahead to a controversial 708-site RV park in the popular tourist town.

People packed Shediac Town Hall for the vote. Many held signs opposing the move, saying "Conflict of Interest," "Do the right thing" and "We're taxpayers too."

The RV park would become the largest business in the region.

The New Brunswick park has more hurdles to clear before it is built. The land rezoned by council Monday is within town limits, but the project depends on the town annexing property outside town limits.

It would need the province's approval for that to happen.

Mayor Jacques LeBlanc said the process has been transparent and followed the rules. He said there will be more opportunities for public debate before the issue is resolved.

MLA is partner in project

Other campground owners and many Shediac residents, who live close to the proposed campground, are upset about the project.

The local residents don't want it in their neighbourhood and are worried about traffic and future property values.

Both groups are upset their local MLA Victor Boudreau is a partner in the campground project.

The owner of another Shediac campground has filed a conflict-of-interest complaint against Boudreau. The Office of the Conflict of Interest Commissioner is looking into the matter.

The campsite owners say there's enough business in town for another RV park.

The promoters say they have heard the concerns about noise, traffic and protecting wetlands. They have promised to work with the town to address those concerns.

A council meeting two weeks ago drew about 150 people to discuss the proposed campsite.

How do they figure that it will be the "largest" business in the region? There are plenty of business in Shediac and Scoudouc that would employ more people year round than the campground will. Glenwood Kitchens comes to mind, even the Sobeys would employ more people year round than the campground will. How many people would be employed at a campground? 20 maybe 30 at the most. They must be referring to the amount of land the camp ground is going to use.
I still don't see how something that takes up that much room and employs so few people is good for the town. Sure it'll help the businesses next to the campground for a couple months a year and Parlee Beach will become even busier but that doesn't help the community. Shediac needs businesses that operate year round, we need to stop referring to ourselves as "summer resort community". People live there year round and the community would grow quickly if there were more services and businesses in the area that operated year round.
End Rant

Just noticed on Shediac Pizza Delight's facebook page that they have officially announced that they are looking at a co-branded Pizza Delight/Scores.

Starbucks in the Shediac Hotel is now open. Oddly enough there is no exterior signage to let people know they are there. We walked by there during the market yesterday and they were handing out free iced coffee samples in front of the hotel.

Is it a full fledged Starbucks or is it just a coffee shop serving Starbucks coffee? If the latter, this would put it in the same category as the coffee shops at the GMIA and at the Delta Beausejour downtown.

I believe it is a cafe that serves Starbucks, I haven't gone in to see since I don't drink coffee.

I've already posted this in the Atlantic Highways Thread, but given the subject matter, it seems reasonable to cross post it here.

This is the new alignment for Route 11 at Shediac showing the new 11/15 interchange, and the dedicated exit for Main Street in Shediac:

One thing this alignment does is open up land for development between Route 11 and Route 134, as the option is now there to extend Main Street to the west eventually connecting Main Street to Route 134 (Shediac Road). Given the proximity to the 11/15 interchange, I could see the land here being very attractive for commercial development.
