Yeah, honestly I like the look of your renderings better.
If the goal was to go for a "Torch" like observation deck its still odd that this is where they landed.

This is actually cool, probably better suited for Vegas but I don't hate it.

I'd change the base though, not a fan.

yeah we’re getting all overwrought over this observation deck spire, understandably, but the lower hotel portion of the building seems generic as could be.

It's the Mullet of buildings; business on the bottom, party at the top.

looks like they wanted some changes, but i take it was nothing major?

Nothing major. There have been consistent minor changes here, but that's not unusual with tall buildings as they work their way through the DOB process.
