I wish I was in Chicago right now (NC) to take a straight on shot of the back right of this building. That image of the staircase outline ( and all those wonderful colors and textures) of the demo'ed building on the existing building is gold. Nick! opportunities!
I've seen similar patterns a few times. These are two sites that immediately came to mind.

Are they bricking up all those windows. Seems alittle pointless unless its for noise or energy saving?
If I am not mistaken, it is for current fire code. There has to be a certain distance between any windows and the next structure. If it is closer than that distance it needs a fire rating and that is normally brick.
