I think the idea is that too many people fetishize Mies, and many draw the wrong lessons. You can't blame the Crusades on Jesus himself...

At its worst, the Mies fetish leads to a perception that all austerity in design is good, regardless of whether austerity is a careful and thoughtful strategy from the outset of a project, or it is a hatchet job forcefully imposed on a project in the late stages by client demands.

Some of this, to be sure, is a result of low fees paid to architects - they don't have the resources to properly re-work a design in response to changing circumstances, and clients figure the existing design can be recycled with minimal changes. Maybe some architects take solace in the "less is more" concept when facing this unpleasant reality.

So you're cherry-picking/deliberately taking portions of my comment out of context to create your own hot take in order to attack me? Got it.

The fact that you claim to be 'utterly baffled' by the Mies reference shows you didn't actually understand my comment, or is a deliberate misdirection on your part.

Then maybe you didn't make your point (which was what, exactly?) as clearly as you thought you did.

Are you saying that Modernism is an inappropriate style for our time and place?

Sterling Bay owns this site (and has their offices across the street). I believe the mockup is for 330 N Green, but they made all the proportions shorter to show a few different conditions and keep the mockup to a reasonable size.

^ Looks more like 360 N Green's facade.

Ah, yeah, I think 330 could be it. The chunky-ness threw me off. Timing makes sense too with the Coyne building coming down.

Probably not 360, that curbed rendering doesn't look so much like the latest version on SB's site

That's what I thought at first, but it doesn't make sense timing-wise. 360 is not at a point where they would be doing facade mockups. It has no anchor tenant, and Sterling Bay is probably set to make some good money on the parking lot they built there, with everyone driving to work post-COVID. 330 on the other hand seems like it will break ground in the next few months, I'm sure SB is already in for permit.

330 will have very tall, elongated curtain wall units, so I understand why the mockup doesn't look like the renderings, but this mockup has been compressed on the y-axis to show the various conditions at slab edges. Also the mockup has a louvered system on one of the panels, and spandrel glass at some slab edges, which matches 330 but not 360. Generally speaking, all three of the buildings in this area (333, 330, 360) are intended to have a common design language, so they're gonna look similar even though two are Gensler and one is SOM.

Curious.....is now a GOLDEN time to pursue a zoning change?

I mean, if you’ve got a really big and egregiously dense and parking-lite project in the works, I can’t imagine a better moment than now.

Everybody is on lockdown, politicians are obsessing around the clock with Covid and Covid-related stats, old folks (the most likely to be NIMBYs) sure as shit aren’t going to go to a crowded community meeting just to bitch about a new proposal....I mean, now is the time!

Oof, what a boring design for the Cassidy Tire tower. It's a nice material palette, SCB killed it with 5252 in Hyde Park... just that corner turret and the recessed balconies feels very 1990s, the landscaped setbacks feel very suburban and the podium is ugly as hell.
