Canadian Larin gets winner in Real Valladolid debut
The Canadian Press January 29, 2023

VALLADOLID, Spain — Canadian forward Cyle Larin had a dream debut for Spain's Real Valladolid CF on Sunday, scoring off the bench (76') in the 90th minute for a 1-0 victory over Valencia CF.

Larin acrobatically knocked in a cross from Venezuelan Darwin Machis to beat Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili at the far post before 19,657 fans at Valladolid's Estadio Municipal Jose Zorrilla.

The victory moved Valladolid (6-11-2) out of the relegation zone into 16th place in Spain's 20-team top tier. Valencia (5-8-5) stands 14th. Valladolid had lost its five previous matches, outscored 10-0.

Larin, Canada's leading men's international scorer, made the move to Spain on Tuesday in a loan deal with a purchase option at the end of the season.

The switch from Belgium's Club Brugge offers the 27-year-old from Brampton, Ont., a fresh start.

Larin joined fellow Canadian Tajon Buchanan at Club Brugge in July from Turkey's Besiktas but failed to establish himself in the lineup. He had one goal in 13 appearances for the Belgian side.

Larin, who has 25 goals in 48 appearances for Canada, saw action in all three World Cup games in Qatar. He played a key part in Canada's successful World Cup qualifying campaign with 13 goals in 16 games.

The six-foot-two striker set the Canadian men's scoring record in January in a 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over the U.S. in Hamilton, passing Dwayne De Rosario, who had 22 goals in 81 appearances.

Larin joined Canadian captain Atiba Hutchinson at Besiktas in January 2018 after a messy exit from Major League Soccer's Orlando City. Larin scored 23 times in 45 games to help Besiktas to the Turkish league and cup double in 2020-21.

After two years at the University of Connecticut, Larin was selected first overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

He won MLS rookie of the year honours in 2015 after scoring a rookie-record 17 goals and added another 14 goals in 2016 and 12 in 2017.

He's done it again. Cyle Larin came off the bench to score for Valladolid to secure a 1-0 win over third place Real Sociedad. Before Larin, Valladolid had 5 losses in a row - all without scoring a single goal.

Cyle Larin has become the first player to score in each of his first two games for Real Valladolid in LaLiga in the 21st century, scoring more goals (2) than in his nine games for Brugge in the Jupiler Pro League this season.

After just two games, he is second in team scoring.

TFC's Jayden Nelson may be close to signing with traditional Norwegian powerhouse, Rosenborg BK. Edit: Confirmed, he has now signed with Rosenborg BK of the Eliteserien.

Anyone else incredibly disappointed by the MLS-Apple TV deal? I think this is really going to hurt the league by reducing the the number of people watching and engaging in it. Times are tight and forcing people to get another subscription service, for a sport/league that isn't as popular in Canada/USA, seems like a very poor decision.

Personally, I used to watch almost every TFC game. But I guess now I'll just be watching the 7-8 games that are actually broadcast on TV. Not a good move for a league thats still growing and trying to gain popularity.

Real Valladolid played to a 0-0 draw against Osasuna in La Liga today. Cyle Larin came in at 60' and was active. They are unbeaten in three games after losing the five previous to his arrival.

The bad news, Real Betis scores on a penalty to beat Real Valladolid 2-1 in La Liga today, Valladolid's first loss since acquiring Cyle Larin. The good news, Cyle Larin gets the start and scores, his third in four games.

And that finish by him was pure class. Didn't go for power. Just pinpoint accuracy into the corner of the net.

I liked him when he was bagging goals for Orlando because he's a Brampton yute. But as I saw more footage of him I really began to love his game.

Swap deal would allow Man Utd to beat Chelsea to Dumfries signing, but Inter have two more options
Lorenzo Bettoni football-italia.net March 8, 2023

Denzel Dumfries is expected to leave Inter in the summer with Chelsea and Manchester United interested and according to Gazzetta Diogo Dalot, Tajon Buchanan and Emil Holm are the Nerazzurri’s targets to replace the Dutchman.

Dumfries has slipped down Simone Inzaghi’s pecking order after the World Cup and with the Nerazzurri in need of balancing their books, the highly-rated right-back will be allowed to leave for €50m at the end of the season, reports Gazzetta.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United are strongly interested in the Dutchman and have already held talks with his agent Rafaela Pimenta. The pink paper reports, Inter would consider a swap deal involving former Milan defender Dalot, but it remains to be seen if the Red Devils will offer their defender a new contract beyond 2024.

According to Gazzetta, the Portugal international isn’t Inter’s only option to replace Dumfries.

Club Brugge and Canada international Buchanan has been scouted by the Nerazzurri this season and could leave Belgium for €15m
, but Spezia‘s Holm is also monitored by Inter’s club directors.

Dumfries joined Inter in a €15m deal including add-ons from PSV in 2021 and has scored seven goals in 75 appearances with the Serie A giants.

2026 World Cup adds 24 matches due to switch in format back to 4 team groups (which makes by far the most sense, 3 team groups are a horrible playing format).

I wonder if that means Toronto and Vancouver gets more games, or they bring back Edmonton into the mix as a host city?

If I had to guess they will add additional matches to current stadiums. Don't think they're going to reopen the bid city process, and if they do I imagine Edmonton is behind plenty of American options which weren't chosen. Canada is not a leading partner for 2026 so I don't think we'll be given any kind of priority. I'm open to being surprised by FIFA but at this stage I doubt it.

I would congratulate FIFA on keeping the 4-team group idea but the problem was originally of their own creation by proposing 3-team groups in the first place. Exceptionally poor idea.

For those curious, from that CMNT roster both Zator and Loturi are CPL alumni. Not bad for a couple seasons in.

Canada squad announced for Concacaf Nations League matches in March 2023
canadasoccer.com March 16, 2023

Canada Soccer have announced their Men’s National Team squad for the upcoming Concacaf Nations League matches against Curaçao and Honduras in the month of March. The two-match series doubles as an opportunity to reach the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Final as well as a qualification route to this summer’s 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.

The series also features Canada’s first home match since the Men’s National Team’s historic run to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. Canada play away against Curaçao on Saturday 25 March (21.00 local) and then back home against Honduras on Tuesday 28 March (20.00 local). The home match will be played in Toronto with tickets available via Ticketmaster.ca. Fans can take advantage of a special ME+3 ticket offer, getting four tickets for the price of three. For complete ticket information visit canadasoccer.com.

“The last time we played in Toronto in March, we qualified for the FIFA World Cup,” said John Herdman, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Head Coach. “This is just the start of the journey and we hope the fans that were there celebrating will support us on our first step towards our home FIFA World Cup preparations for 2026.”

Canada (1W-0D-1L) have two matches remaining in their League A Group C schedule while their opponents Curaçao (1-0-2) and first-place Honduras (2-0-1) have one match left each. Both of Canada’s matches will be broadcast live on OneSoccer, available as a linear channel on Telus’ Optik TV (Channel 980) as well as online at OneSoccer.ca, through the OneSoccer app and on the fuboTV Canada platform. Fans will find extended coverage for the matches across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube featuring the hashtag #CANMNT.

Canada are riding a Men’s National Team record 15-match undefeated streak at home including a joint-record seven-match home win streak. Canada Soccer’s combined National Teams, meanwhile, have an 11-match undefeated streak at BMO Field since June 2017, which is also a Canada Soccer record.

While Canada are perfect 2-0-0 against Curaçao since 2017, they hold a 5W-3D-2L home record against Honduras since 1985. The overall record is an even 1-1-1 in their last three matches against Honduras since September 2021, with Honduras the 2-1 winners in San Pedro Sula in this round of Concacaf Nations League.

CANADA SOCCER’S MEN’S NATIONAL TEAM
Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team are the reigning Kings of Concacaf, having finished first overall in the Concacaf Final Round of FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers from September 2021 to March 2022. It marked the third time that Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team won a Concacaf title, having previously won the 1985 Concacaf Championship and the 2000 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Across FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers, Canada posted 14 wins, four draws and just two losses over three rounds as they became the first nation from the region to qualify for Qatar with a 4:0 home win on 27 March 2022 in Toronto. Canada scored a Men’s National Team record 54 goals across the cycle while Cyle Larin set the Canadian record for goals (13), Alphonso Davies set the Canadian record for assists (eight), and Milan Borjan set the Canadian record for clean sheets (nine). Of note, both Larin (13) and Jonathan David (nine) were the top-two goalscorers across all Concacaf nations in 2021-22 FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers.

Throughout the qualifying campaign, Canada set numerous team and individual records, also setting a Concacaf record for the longest undefeated streak in a FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers campaign. Canada set their own Men’s National Team records for consecutive wins (eight) and longest home undefeated streak (14 matches). Across 2021, Canada were the “Most Improved Side” on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings.

I wonder what the crowd will be like at BMO on the 28th. Already went through the joy of topping qualifying and then participating at the WC. Don't know if there will be enough diehards and casuals to come out in March. I was thinking of going.
