Old-style brick building in L.A. circa 1914

Anyone recognize the brick building on the left side of these pictures? I think most everything else was sets brought to the location. Thanks!

If I had to guess, Ossrae, I'd say. .um. .somewhere near Chinatown(?)

My first thought was the 'crib district' in downtown Los Angeles. . .

. .but the bricks aren't buttressed (for lack of the correct word) like the bricks in your two mystery screen-grabs.

And I believe you're correct that the movies mostly used sets but I believe the building in the screen-grab (below) is a real building
and as you can see it is in a rural setting.

37:47

As is this one.

30:19

This scene (shown above) with the fake donkey roaming around in what I presume to be the Santa Monica Mountains.

Why do I think it's the Santa Monica Mountains?

Because there is also a quick shot looking down on a beach with a scattering of real building but I CAN'T FIND THE BEACH SCENE AGAIN. *pulls hair out*...*jumps out window*

I'll post the image when I find it.

Thanks for solving the mystery, odinthor. I appreciate it.

The building's first name was the "Conservation Life Bldg.":

("Conservative Life" was an insurance company) The name was changed somewhere around 1908. .

. .to simply, the Exchange Building.

Now I'm trying to find a photograph of the building and hopefully one that shows the entrance so I can compare it to the cigar store cabinet card. (so far, I got nuttin')

Speaking of cigar stores. . .

i don't believe we have seen this one.

Currently on eBay

It appears that 'Bodie Lincoln' worked at "Chief Bar" at 510 S. Main St.... Would that be the same place as the Belmont Bar.

For search purposes:...Belmont Bar and Cigar Store...Fifth and Main Sts., Los Angeles, Cal....Darmody & Schaffer Co., Inc.

I think that this is the building in question, although LAPL's description says: "The Insurance Building on the northeast corner of 3rd and Hill Streets. Bicycles and horses-and-buggies are parked next to the curb." There's no mention of "Conservation Life" or "Exchange". There's also no sign of the cigar stand.

Here's some more info:

LA Herald, 1/12/1910.

LA Herald, 1/16/1910.

Accompanying the above item, LA Herald, 1/16/1910.

And here's the neighborhood, from the 1909 Birdseye map:

Thanks Hoss and odinthor.

I wasn't expecting so many entrances to one building. (and they're of different design)

detail

And I think I missed one between 1 and 2.

I hope I don't give anyone whiplash.

Good news!..I found the elusive beach scene in The Magic Cloak of Oz. (1914)

It lasts all of two seconds.

38:24 - 38:26

And here's a bit of information on the National Film Corporation of American.

"In 1918 National expanded its production and took over the space of the former Oz Film Manufacturing Company studios (1914-1915) , and Famous Players-Lasky, on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Gower Street (1116 Lodi Place)."

So it only makes sense that the bulk of The Magic Cloak of Oz was filmed in the Santa Monica area.

Now, about those bricks walls, Ossrae. ..They're obviously part of a set so maybe they're fake too

But I have to admit they do look real. . .especially compared to the painted backdrops in the back.

Ossrae's original post here.

. . .and just in time because I have a very interesting - mystery - cabinet card....Unfortunately the seller's description is very vague.

"Antique Cabinet Card Photo CIGAR STORE" . .but it's quite possible the store is in Los Angeles because the eBay seller is the same seller who listed the Los Angeles cabinet cards that I posted yesterday.

eBay (sold 2 hours after my screengrabs)

Let's take a closer look to see if we can glean some clues.

Boy I wish I'd snagged that cabinet card. I have a thing for the Conservative Life bldg, since it's seen from every "here's the view from Angels Flight" postcard.

USC

The structure was demolished for a parking lot in 1948.

Beaudry, do you happen to know the circumstances of the Conservative Life Building being demolished? Perhaps it had had fire damage? I don't seem to be able to track down information about its latter days. It seems like too fine a building to just be razed for a parking lot for no particular reason.

That's an excellent question. I mean, yes, Los Angeles is famous for tearing down first-rate structures for parking lots, but I think of such activity as more postwar, particularly late 1950s and into the 60s, à la the 1963 demolition of the Stimson Block (which has remained a parking lot for 50 years).

In fact, I look to be wrong about my 1948 date; 1948 is when Walt's Auto Parks took out a permit to build their parking attendant shed. The actual demo permit to demolish Conservative Life was issued in 1940 and again in 1941, so, demolished probably closer to late 41 (building still appears in the August 1941 aerial):

There's no indication of fire in the Building and Safety dox previous to that time, and I can't find any mention of anything untoward happening to the structure in the newspapers, using every available address on Third and Hill.

I guess Whiting-Mead, who owned the structure, crunched the numbers and even in 1940 it made more sense to provide pay-parking on a surface lot than maintain the building, despite it being only forty years old. And now, the northeast corner of Third and Hill has been a surface lot for twice that long, eighty years...

This is quite a conversation. Thanks so much Beaudry and odinthor.

The photograph of the elaborate entrance to the Conservative Life Building is nothing short of amazing.
So if the cigar store was located between the Corinthian column and the wooden entrance doors (alcove, right?) how was it secured at night?

Not to change the subject but what pray tell do you think is on the roof of the building next to the Conservative Life Building?

detail of Beaudry's 1941 aerial.

Is something being hoisting onto the roof.

Revisit Beaudry's aerial here
