The family name, as you'll soon see, is Walton and the family lived at 2337 Thompson Street, Los Angeles.

Now 2337 Portland Street. Like Thompson Street, Portland Street runs between W 21st Street and W Adams Boulevard. The image below is from 2019 because the house is less blocked by trees. Portland Street seems to be about a 50/50 split of old and new houses.

Thank you for the leads! I'm going to explore them. It looks like lions holding shields has been somewhat common over the centuries.

Cast stone work on the hilltop was plentiful. Another plentiful item that is seen all throughout the estate is lions holding shields. The black and white historic image, from the 1920’s, was one of the workshops where these lions were created.

Cast stone is a type of molded concrete that closely imitates stone. This design was inspired by a Spanish 15th century stone lion that was purchased in the 1920’s from New York.

These particular lions featured in the historic image made their way up to the Celestial Suite balcony, on the 4th floor of Casa Grande.

Larry Reed Sports Cars had locations in Westchester and Torrance that survived, I believe until around 1980. I'm thinking this is Westchester based on nothing more than a hunch and a belief that Westchester location was around earlier and the Triumph TR3 was produced from 1955 to 1962.

In the obituary for Charles Strong Walton, you might have noticed that one of the pallbearers was J. Gregg Layne, which might have rung a bell with you as it did with me.

Layne was a local historian who did his share of not only writing but also collecting photos.

If you look closely there is something written below the photograph but it's very difficult to read.


I enlarged it and tried to adjust the contrast to no avail.

Still can't read it but I think I see the 1903.



And there's a stamp on the back.



Thins is probably the photographer's stamp. (as opposed to the store's stamp)

Christmas time? That would explain the levitating trees. ..................................I know they're not levitating but the ones in the back (on the right) look like they're levitating.

I think you're seeing things, e_r. To me, it looks like there's a post either side of the path a few feet from the steps.

The houses were still standing at 830 E Jefferson Boulevard until around 2019/20, but now there's sadly just an empty lot. Their final years show them looking rather run down, but I think they still looked good in the 2009 image below.

The houses survived for a hundred years or more (in this case, more than a hundred years) . . . . and then poof, they're gone.

The 1960 yellow pages puts Larry Reed Inc. at 5208 Centinela Ave (cross street-La Cienega) and Larry Reed Sports Cars Inc. in Torrance at 19019 Hawthorne Ave. I think this is the Westchester Location. Currently, it's a Chick-Fil-A

e_r, "W.R. Lamb" is Wilbur R. Lamb, according to the 1907 CD a collector for the Nicholls-Hammell Co. Raymond, Dexter, and Annie must be visitors (siblings?). By 1908 he had moved to 972 E. 33rd St.

By 1917, he was a salesman for the Broadway Dept. Store, and living at 5023 Halldale Avenue.

Well, our Wilbur continued his peregrinations; but perhaps we've seen enough of his string of homes.

Meantime, the Nicholls-Hammell-Loomis Co. was located at 1128-1140 S. San Pedro St., and their line was Fuels and Feed.

Those look like Series I or Series II Hillman Minx in the background which would put this photograph in 1956 or 1957. The Triumph TR3 became the TR3A in 1957 with a full-width grill so these are TR3s from 1956.

Thanks for the information on W. R. Lamb, odinthor. I don't think we will ever know who Raymond, Dexter and Annie are.

According to their father's obituary in the Meriden, CT, Daily Journal of Jan 25, 1943, Wilbur Raymond Lamb had three brothers, one of whom was Dexter. So..."Raymond" in the picture is Wilbur Raymond Lamb Jr, Dexter is his uncle, and Annie is his mother--WR Sr's wife....

. . .and just in time because I have a very interesting - mystery - cabinet card....Unfortunately the seller's description is very vague.

"Antique Cabinet Card Photo CIGAR STORE" . .but it's quite possible the store is in Los Angeles because the eBay seller is the same seller who listed the Los Angeles cabinet cards that I posted yesterday.

Let's take a closer look to see if we can glean some clues.



First of all, I see Carlson Hand Laundry on the glass case.

. . .and there was a Carlson Hand Laundry in Los Angeles at the time.



But the cigar shop is only a drop-off location (AGENCY) so I doubt it is the 710 W. 3rd. St. location.



But WAIT, there's more!

The cigar store appears to be at the entrance to a large office building and if you look above the door there are more tantalizing clues.


Let's take a closer look at that.



Hmmm. . .I see. .um. .NGE BUILDING and below that I see 3?21.
