Golden-era Hollywood versus Disney’s Hollywood Studios – a side-by-side comparison

I don't know if anybody's done this before but I've just returned from a trip to Walt Disney World and was so struck by the recreation of iconic LA buildings at Disney's Hollywood Studios that I worked up a blog with side-by-side comparisons like this:

and this

There are 14 side-by-sides in all and you can see them here

If I remember correctly the Menu had many American dishes with French names tacked on. I guess that makes it French.
It was certainly well prepared and presented as was the spectacular view.
The new towers, as this one was, were supposed to be in the south of the City Hall but that did not happen....they were built north and west of Civic Center.

Hah! Proof! Proof, I tells ya, that the old steamer pier at Avalon had a rail system at one time:

So there was a Japanese Garden on top of the Occidental Building! Thanks Hoss.

And here is the Seibu rooftop restaurant/cafe that I mentioned earlier today.

As you can see...the restaurant appears to be 'floating' above a Japanese pond.

If anyone is interested, you can see more images of Seibu at NLA post #6277 from Jan. 31, 2012.

odinthor's photo of the baggage rails on the pier in Avalon reminded me of a few more Catalina pics I uploaded on imageshack.

ebay

I'm almost certain that I've never seen this place before. (note the fish-shaped boats lined up) So was this odd looking place located?

It was between where the ferry from the mainland docks and Avalon proper; roughly where the veterans memorial is now. You can see the Queen Anne style house in the upper right of er's pic.

Interesting comparisons, MartinTurnbull, I didn't know so many buildings had been copied. The only one I'd question is this one:

I think the Disney one is based on the Baine Building at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Whitney Avenue.

Happy 99th Anniversary to Musso and Frank Grill, originally named Frank’s Café when it first opened on September 27, 1919.

I wonder when they dropped the S from Frank?

As promised, here are some more images from Julius Shulman's 1965 photoset "Job 3876: William L. Pereira and Associates, Occidental Center". The set includes some great shots of the exterior, but they don't add much new to the thread. I wonder how many of these features remain. I'll start with this large theater.

I'm guessing that this is a dining area, although I can't see a food counter.

Here's a very fancy-looking boardroom.

And a more modest meeting room.

There are a couple of pictures of this garden taken from level with the base which made me think it might be the Japanese garden, but then I found this elevated view.

A lower angle shows the three pools flowing into each other.

The garden continued along this tiled area.

These are the walkways above.

The elevator lobby looks quite plain when compared to examples like the Richfield Building. Of course, the Richfield was torn down three years after these photos were taken.

I'll finish with this one which appears to show the bar area leading to the restaurant which started the recent discussion of this building.

All from Getty Research Institute

If the building is a stable I thought the apparatas might be used to help get hay up into the loft (catapult-style?)
but I don't remember seeing anything like that on a farm.

In this second photograph, taken before the the small shed-like bldg was built, the structure appears to be on sleds so it can be moved around.

As you can see...the guy wires are attached to the sleds.

ultra-close-up

I know that I've pondered this before. I hope I haven't already asked about it on the thread...and forgot.
If I did aske about it before...I don't recall the answer.

which reminds me....

:
What you see is the Los Angeles and Independence RR engine terminal at Santa Monica
The 'shed' is the engine house, the frame thingy is a turntable. The common description of that type was "Gallows"
The LA&I was absorbed by the SP
LA&I built a pier, about where the present pier is. SP built up the coast and then built tits "Mammoth Wharf' around 4200 ft out into the ocean along side a submarine ridge and canyon. As there was almost no coal in California, SP imported coal for Southern California operations from Australia and Vancouver Island. SP had essentially built and equipped the Esquimalt and Nanaimo for Mr Dunsmuir to ship coal.
Oil development in the late 1890s doomed SP's use of coal for locomotive fuel in So CA before 1905 [ um, or so]
SP lost the Harbor Fight to San Pedro and turned the former LA&I line to Los Angeles Pacific for electric operation. The outer end of the wharf was lopped off, SP stopped accepting freight ca 1910.
The route became known as the PE 'Airline' much of which is now an LRT route

I don't mind that the park(s) copy those buildings, but they sure are a nuisance when you're trying to picture search the originals!

In the top photo below you can see two people walking on those white rectangles in the fountain. Did they want people to do that?

In the above photo, the second white rectangle in the fountain seems to have an indented square shape in the center. (?)

Nice post, HossC!

I don't know what the indented square is/was, but the two people also show up on this color photo that I omitted earlier. Note that there also seems to be an indented square in the white rectangle in the top pool. Is it just me, or do the top two pools look like massive cell phones (ignoring the fountains)?

I had no idea the Occidental Center was such a masterpiece of mid-century architecture. Thank you for the Shulman photographs Hoss.

How much of this was lost in the most recent renovation? Did they, at least, keep this stunning 'atrium'?

p.s. the fountains look like strategically placed iphones.

Occidental Center neighbor

This caught my eye.

detail from this Shulman photograph

Is it a support for a large sign (now gone) or a remnant of an old radio tower?
