Its official....Moose Jaw to Build $61,000,000 Multi plex

The bickering should stop...The people have spoken in favor of the new arena for the 2nd time. all the kooks need to shat up now and stop whining. People have voted on a resolution that the city reaffirm a 34.5 million dollar commitment to an arena, soccer, and curling facility. A group of citizens against the Multi Plex Facility forced a delay by starting a petition...so this is the 2nd referendum.....

60% have voted to commit the 34.5 million towards our new Multi Plex. This will insure we keep our Western Hockey League Team.

we will now say good bye to the horrid "Crushed Can"...We will get a State of the art arena with 4500 seats.

this is for sure!

yahoooo!!

12,725 Moose Jaw residents had their say, and 60 per cent of them have said "Yes".

The Multiplex referendum is finished and the break-down is simple.

7,626 people voted for the resolution and 5,099 people voted against the resolution.

We'll have more on the story as it develops this evening, and we'll have a complete recap of the results with reaction and much more Thursday morning on 800 CHAB-AM, Country 100, 100.7-FM and Mix 103, 103.9-FM starting at 6:00a.m.

when I was living in MJ, I noticed some of the old kooks in that town were religiously against this thing being built. I wouldn't be surprised if they still tried something to cancel this project.

Good for MJ! Hopefully it actually gets built this time. Let's hope there's no need for a referendum on the referendum on the referendum

Cool. What else besides a hockey arena will be part of the multi-plex?

Are there any renders?

Congrats Moose Jaw!

These "kooks" you refer to awefully sounds like the "friends" who wanted to save the Eatons building in Winnipeg a few years ago, so that they could prevent the new MTS Centre being built. Lucky for us, they failed, and the MTS Centre was built.

How come the arena cost is so high? The new Windsor arena cost $71 million and it seats 7000, $61 million for a 4000 seat arena sounds a tad high.

just skimmed over the comments and will comment and providevlinks later..unless someone beats me to it.

It does include an indoor soccer facility that will stand alone in a different area of the city....The Curling rink will be part of the facility as well.

Inflation unfortunately has increased dramatically on everything the past couple years...The City had to buy land as well.

there is controversy over the cost and location.

gotta go................

Nicely done Moose Jaw.

All cities need a focal point (in addition to The Tunnels, The Spa... ).

Finally! I thought this had been dealt with a year ago until I read that people were having to vote on it again, crazyness. It will definetely help continue to boslter MJ's image.

the no side started a petition and received the required amount of signatures for another vote.....City councils hands were tied and the project was delayed another year. Some of these "no people" are real nutcases and wouldnt be surprised if they resort to some shenanigans. I hope they keep it to non violent demonstrations when we open our building. Tensions were high as there were peasant revolts inside the Chamber during City Council meetings. Our cops have tasers now

Police say somebody in Moose Jaw is taking the multiplex debate to a ridiculous extreme.

Chief Dale Larsen says somebody called a Moose Jaw Times-Herald reporter and threatened the lives of the mayor and city councillors, if the multiplex goes ahead. The arena complex is expected to cost nearly $20 million more than first thought, prompting a petition calling for another referendum.

In a news release, Larsen says they take the threat very seriously and investigators are checking it out.

Larsen goes on to say the police service does not take sides on such an issue, but will protect everyone's right to expression.
