Not by me. I mean, there's activity there, but I'm pretty sure it's the Wawanesa guys using it as extra work space.

There wont be any activity for a while, maybe longer.

Maybe longer than a while? So like quite a while I guess? Or is that shorter than a while?

I had hear Spring..I guess not..It would have been nice to have Sutton Hotel open in time for the 2025 Grey Cup.32 months away yet.
I guess maybe in time for Winnipeg bicentennial in the 2070's then?

They are an odd company. They work at their own pace. I was advised months ago by a framer at the new airport Sandman that they were told to get ready to move to Sutton starting in January; that obviously never happened.

Wasn't the funding for the convention center contingent on the development of the hotel, to support the cc with tax revenue and outside dollars attending events at the CC? How s this left to fester? I understand conditions changed with Covid, but it's time to get off the pot.

I believe that was another pipe dream funding scheme. Much like the new stadium and tax revenues from redevelopment of the Polo Park site.

Pretty sure the cc expansion was linked to the hotel development...that's when Center Venture bought the old Carlton Inn.

This was from a news release in 2012.

Released:
June 25, 2012 2:33 pm

The Province of Manitoba is distributing this release on behalf of the governments of Canada and Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

WINNIPEG - The Governments of Canada, Manitoba and Winnipeg announced today their partnership to support the expansion and renovation of the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be over $180 million. Under the Building Canada Fund - Major Infrastructure Component, the Government of Canada is setting aside up to one-third of total eligible costs, to a maximum federal contribution of $46,646,667, to help realize this project. The Province of Manitoba is contributing up to $51 million and the same amount is provided by the City of Winnipeg. The balance of funding will be provided from new incremental property tax revenues from an integrated hotel and commercial development adjacent to the Winnipeg Convention Centre, as well as additional revenue from the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

Ya but I think that all fell apart at some point. Maybe I'm wrong.

Like yes Centreventure got a hotel developer involved (TNSE actually did). But I don't think there is any actual link between the projects now, in a financial sense, beyond the City getting tax dollars to the general coffers from the new hotel.

I believe you are correct that all fell through. The current struggle is without the hotel capacity they can’t attract the larger type of conventions that will help bolster their bottom line.

Winnipeg transfers $1.3M to RBC Convention Centre to help manage construction debt

Like everything else in this city and province the taxpayer is left holding the bag! Way too much govt. interference where decisions are not made on economics or with any kind of cost/benefit analysis!

Wouldn't surprise me if the convention centre expansion isn't the WPS headquarters fiasco all over again!

Man. That sucks. I have no hope that they will build the residential tower at this point but I can’t imagine them just abandoning the millions they’ve already spent and not build the hotel. How long can they wait?

The city obviously doesn't charge enough for sidewalk and lane blockages.

I guess if they can afford to park a tower crane there forever they must have the money to block endless sidewalks lol

From memory there were actually 2-3 different groups actively working to develop the same hotel site but they were not working with each other, not talking to each other and none of them was actually developing the hotel, rather they were all project brokers similar to Center Venture.

Eventually the whole thing blew up but not until after the Carlton Inn was purchased and demolished.
