San Antonio landmark demolition approved, making way for food truck park

The building was damaged in a fire earlier this year.

https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/lo...k-17457606.php

UPDATE: 9:45 a.m. Thursday, September 22: The Historic and Design Review Commission unanimously approved the demolition of the Achtzehn House at the corner of Delaware Street and Hoefgen Avenue. The demolition will clear the way for the developer's plans for a food truck park.

The demolition was approved without discussion. However, commissioners also approved stipulations saying the developer must submit a salvage and reuse plan for any materials that can be salvaged. The developer must also return to HDRC with a detailed architectural plan for the food truck park.

Original story follows below.

A historic landmark home on Eastside San Antonio could be demolished to make way for a food truck park. Thomas Glendenning Bright Lakes Real Estate will appear before the Historic and Design Review Commission on Wednesday, September 21, to ask for permission to demolish the historic home.

The home at 509 Delaware St., also known Achtzehn House, sits on a 2.9-acre lot at the corner of Delaware and Hoefgen Avenue that was once home to Classic Paving Trends Inc., according to a quick Google search and an old property brochure from the company that previously owned the lot. Glendenning intends to replace the structure with a food truck on a smaller portion of the lot, according to HDRC agenda documents.

The Achtzehn House was built in 1896 for Oswald Achtzehn and is on the 1912 Sanborn map. It was designated as a historical landmark by San Antonio City Council in 1987, according to agenda documents. Now the developer says the home qualifies for demolition because it was "heavily damaged" by a fire sometime in March this year.

Photos in agenda documents show the roof of the Acthzehn House has collapsed inward and appears to have not been cleaned up since the home caught fire.

A site plan included in the agenda documents show that the food truck park will have space for seven or possibly more food trucks and what looks like a wooden patio with seating. HDRC will consider the demolition request on Wednesday.

California's Round Table Pizza serves up first San Antonio restaurant

https://www.mysanantonio.com/food/ar...-Editors-Picks

A California-founded pizza joint is celebrating its grand opening for South Central Texas residents. The new Round Table Pizza officially opened on Monday, September 26, giving San Antonio residents a chance to grab a slice of West Coast pizza.

"I've had over people come by and ask me, 'Is this the real Round Table Pizza?,'" San Antonio franchisee Alex Eremian said before opening the restaurant. "People came up to me and said, 'This is where I had my first date or this is where I had my birthday party.' This means a lot to people."

Eremian is one of the people that's been impacted by Round Table Pizza. He worked at the pizza company when he was younger and knows that people are craving a slice of West Coast-style pizza. He moved to San Antonio in 2019 and noticed there wasn't any pizza like he had back home. Fast forward to now, Eremian and his team are now opening Round Table Pizza's first San Antonio location.

City hastens St. Mary’s roadwork as bar owners watch sales plummet

https://sanantonioreport.org/city-ha...sales-plummet/

Alcohol sales at the Squeezebox, a bar on the St. Mary’s Strip, plummeted 60% this August compared to previous years, state data shows, representing about $50,000 in lost sales.

The bar’s owner, Aaron Peña, says street construction is the cause.

For over a year, road crews have torn up pavement and closed off roadways along the St. Mary’s Strip, a bustling hub of nightlife near Trinity University and San Antonio College. The work has also interrupted utilities in the area. Last Saturday four bars, including the Squeezebox, had to abruptly shut down after crews broke a water main.

But even when work goes smoothly, it chokes the traffic of pedestrians and cars alike. Patrons often park blocks away and navigate shifting construction blockades to get to the bars — or they don’t come at all.

“It’s a maze to get around down here, and it’s not getting any better,” Peña said.

The San Antonio Report’s analysis of data from the Texas Comptroller’s Office shows that falling alcohol sales have been widespread across the Strip’s 15 or so bars this summer. In August, about 2 in 3 bars saw sales drop compared to the same month in 2019. The average decline was by about a third.

Elsewhere Garden Bar releases sneak peek of second San Antonio location on city's North Side

The new spot will feature a 45-foot ferris wheel, a secret garden speakeasy and a greenhouse for weddings and events.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...-side-30001452

When the owners of popular downtown hangout Elsewhere Garden Bar and Kitchen announced their purchase of six acres on the city’s North Side, many were curious as to what kind of Insta-worthy installations the group would create at the second location.

Now, they’ve released renderings of the new venue, called Elsewhere Too, which include a 45-foot ferris wheel, secret garden speakeasy and sprawling greenhouse for private events and weddings.

Beyond the whimsical features, Elsewhere Too will boast a larger kitchen and bar than the original Elsewhere location, as well as a dedicated dog park area and a kiddo-friendly play area, Fuhrmann told the Current in May. The bar and eatery also hopes to strike partnerships with groups that can stage on-site immersive experiences.

Elsewhere's flagship location at 103 E. Jones Ave. opened in 2020 when the owners took over the riverside property formerly occupied by chef Andrew Weissman's fast-casual restaurant The Luxury.

Elsewhere Too is being designed by Lake|Flato Architects. It is slated to open mid to late 2023, according to social media posts.

P. Terry’s first restaurant inside Loop 410 will be across from Brackenridge Park

https://www.expressnews.com/food/art...y-17501077.php

P. Terry’s San Antonio expansion is heading inside Loop 410, across the street from Brackenridge Park.

The new restaurant will be located at 3302 Broadway Ave. and will be the Austin-based burger chain’s first location inside Loop 410. It is also the fifth establishment in San Antonio.

P. Terry’s filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation says construction will begin at the 2,785-square-foot store in January. The burger joint, located where the former King’s Palace Chinese Restaurant used to be, will feature a dining room and a double-lane drive-thru.

Records show construction on the restaurant is expected to wrap up by September 2023.

The first P. Terry’s in San Antonio opened in the Medical Center last summer. Two other finished locations are on the far West Side and North Side along Loop 1604.

P. Terry's is known for its signature Googie aesthetic, a Southern California style influenced by the 1950s and 1960s Space Age.

Along with the Broadway location, P. Terry’s told MySA that the chain is cooking up additional restaurants in San Antonio at 22607 North U.S. 281 and near Blanco Road and Loop 1604.

P. Terry’s growth into San Antonio was a “natural choice” for the company, CEO Todd Coerver told MySA last year. Coerver was a San Antonio resident for eight years before joining P. Terry’s.

Luther's Cafe — beloved diner and drag show venue — closes temporarily

https://www.expressnews.com/food/res...d-17502491.php

Through the dusty windows, tarps could be seen draped over some tables, while other four-tops were stacked in the middle of the large dining room of the ground-floor unit of the Tobin Lofts at 1503 N. Main Ave. Luther's, which opened in 1949, moved into the space in 2012 after decades of operating in a nearby former gas station.

Luther's website did not provide any further information about the closing. The restaurant's Facebook page indicated Luther's is "Temporarily Closed." A voicemail seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Luther's has long been a key fixture in the heart of San Antonio's "gay strip" along North Main Avenue, where several LGBTQ-friendly businesses thrive. The distinctive rainbow-colored Pride Crosswalk just outside the restaurant's doors was funded in part by Luther's owner, Randy Cunniff, through the sale of Fiesta medals in 2018.

It's [current year] and San Antonio is still allowing drive thrus in the urban core. Just insanity, can't wait for the Main bike lane to be constantly blocked by traffic. And you just know convention people are going to drive their lifted pickups from the La Quinta to the drive thru instead of walking.

Absolutely asinine to allow a drive-thru downtown like that. Being storefront, cafe-only would not have killed them.

It’s utilizing an already car oriented parking garage. They’re not tearing anything down to put a drive thru. In my opinion, this is harmless and being overblown by you guys.

Before it was a roped off parking area. Not great but it wasn't causing any active conflicts with pedestrians. Now it will be an active driveway which mark my words will be blocking the sidewalk and bike lane 6 days a week (have you seen a chic fil a drive thru line before?)

Yup, it'll probably look like any school zone in the city at dropoff and pickup. At least that's not an all day affair.

(We do need better ways to get the munchkins in and out of schools though.)

They have a fanatical following for whatever reason. The one by UT is always blocking traffic at eating times and that area by the Rand already cannot handle much traffic. I would be surprised if it doesn’t suck traffic-wise. It will already food-wise 😆

I know about the fanatical following of chick-fil-A. These places always cause traffic jams wherever they are located. So I stopped for a first time just to see what all the fuss was about and tried the chicken and there was nothing so remarkable about the meal.
One night I was watching Stephen Colbert and it was announced he said, that during the pandemic when there was shortages on many things, it was announced that there would be a shortage of the Dipping Sauce at the Chick-fil-a Restaurants and then said "the chicken is not that good without the dipping sauce".
I saw nothing remarkable about the chicken there. Except for the traffic backups.

That is funny that you used “best quality fast food” in a sentence
