I just acquired 3 lintels I'm going to reuse in restoring a historic facade where the top story of brick was stripped and replaced with shitty 70's brick. I can't believe some of the stuff people tear down in this city, whatever, their loss, my gain.
Dang, now I have to do this at least once.

I always wished they'd move them just one block north. Would be a nice completion to that block.

A little bit not too. It was nice but not super nice.

You can ask. Probably will get a no, but you can ask.

Anyone remember that those buildings are where Richard Gere's law offices were in "Primal Fear"?
Wow I just rewatched that. Now I’m sentimental again dammit!

Sometimes they pallet up all of the loose bricks that manage to survive wrecking and sell those for salvage. Unfortunately there's not enough demand for standard historic masonry units like brick and rusticated limestone to justify deconstructing these types of buildings block by block. That usually happens only where mandated by the city preservation divisions, such as the Cedar Hotel or the Farwell Building. Maybe similar to brick if some of that stonework survives the wrecking, especially the window lintels it will be salvaged rather than dumped.

Usually it's the intricately carved stonework, cast iron elements, or terra cotta that have salvage value that is worth deconstructing portions to extract them safely, and these building had none or very few of this. The brown building in the middle had some, but that soft sandstone was so deteriorated there was practically nothing left. On that note, I just checked his blog and it looks like Eric Nordstrom of Urban Remains salvaged the original cast iron railing elements from the stoop of the south building.

This article about Chicago common brick is FANTASTIC- https://www.chicagoreader.com/chicag...ent?oid=898211

I read it 20 years ago and it has stayed in my head. Definitely worth a read.

I was almost late to a haircut last night as I was mesmerized by a prep site. a PREP SITE!! When this starts going up, I will be late to any commitment I have if it involves walking by the construction site.

The buildings are now completely on the ground... I have it on good authority that the foundation permit will be issued within the next week and we will see the foundation contractor begin mobilization. Exciting stuff!

I’ve only been able to grab salvage from dumpsters in public right-of-way. Even then I still asked the contractors for permission

it's a farily big deal.

being born in '76, i completely missed out on the sears - big stan - big john construction frenzy of the late '60s/early '70s*.

OCS will be the 5th tallest building (3rd tallest by roof height) that I will be able to watch rise in my sweet home chicago.

(*) man, what a time that must have been, to go from a city of 500 & 600 footers to a trio of full-blown supertalls in handful of years.

It must have been great to see. On the dark side Daley SR. allowed the bulldozing of a large amount of great historic building during the 1960's and 1970's.

^ well, sure. all eras have their good and bad.

i was speaking strictly from a skyline growth perspective as skyscraper construction nerd.

in any event, for chicagoans under the age of 50, OCS will be one of the tallest towers we've ever seen built in this town.
