Instead of posting every 4 or 5 months I’m trying to do monthly for a change And strangely I took a lot of pics this past month, so here a selection of January in Victoria in chronological order, cause why not.

Photo 1.

Enjoying a coffee but taking a picture from the slightly below ground window seating at Milano on Government street. The building in the background is actually the first hotel in the city (and reportedly BC) opened in 1858. In 1913 it was refurbished with stucco and timbering to reflect the British Tudor style which was popular at the time. For many years it was a tourist gift store, in the past year a cigar store. More historical information:

Photo 2.

Taken from the Johnson Street Bridge looking back to the active construction of the Pearl condo building and the recent addition to the historic Janion Building. Cool thing about this building (mainly comprised of micro lofts and Air BnB units) is that the underground parking connects right to the harbour so you can store your canoe, paddle board or kayak in the parking and launch it right from here. The girl was watching a group of 6 harbour seals who were lazily dining on a school of herring.

Photo 3 and 4.

A look at three new condo buildings as part of the very slow build out of Dockside Green (this is directly across from downtown in Vic West). They are also buildings public pathways with streams right below. The lower level space will have other developments in the years ahead.

Night time view of the lot that will soon be a construction site for a couple of rental towers. This part of downtown is called Harris Green, named after the first mayor of Victoria Thomas Harris who served from 1862 to 1865. Fairfield neighbourhood (next to downtown and the ocean). Nothing overly special about these homes, just scenes that stood out to me. That said nearly every home has an interesting appearance, feature, colour or garden. Not massive gardens as this is an older neighbourhood with homes on small lots, but just thoughtfully done. Looks great in the spring and summer, but even in winter you can see it’s ok.

Government street on the day of the Chinese New Year Parade, which I couldn’t get anywhere near close enough to get pics of as it was too crowded. So, pics of bikes instead

And my goodness, I was thinking I’d post only 30 pictures, I clearly need to do a better job of cutting down next month if I’m to achieve that! I guess I got carried away in January, not something I expected, lol.

Thanks if you made it this far.

Wow Zoomer!!! What wonderful photos. The ones looking through the circles as best as I can describe it are mind blowing good. You've got such a great gift of photography. Thanks so much for sharing. I've been wanting to go out to take photos myself but haven't been able to since falling down my stairs and injuring my foot. I haven't been able to work either. :-(

Probably the most underrated city on the Prairies, at least from a visitor's perspective.

Thank everyone for your kind comments GreatScaper get well soon and we’ll go out and take some photos this month or next.

FrAnks - you are totally correct, I will be like a kid in a candy store when I make it to Quebec! My sister was there is 2019 and she texted me to say “YOU would love it here!” She knows me well, and I’m sure the things I like and appreciate about cities I will find in abundance there.

Also looking at visiting Toronto and Montreal, but each city really deserves it own trip to be honest. For each of these cities I’d love to know the 3 touristy things I should avoid, the 3 touristy things I should check out and 3 other places not on the tourist radar that I should really check out. I’ll start planning my itinerary now, lol. If not this year, next year if all goes well.

I don't like to say it because it's like I'm constantly bragging (I'm an humble person lol) but Québec City is a real gem. It's one of a kind city. Not only the old city itself is awesome, but you'll get kilometers or pre-war architecture in all direction from the old town!

If you're curious to see thru my lenses, here's some pictures I took:

Good luck in your future trips. I'm a Montrealer myself, you can ask me for advices anytime.

Thanks for the links FrAnks - wonderful photos! And everyone knows you’re not bragging, you’re stating the truth I’ll be sure to check in and ask questions before I head to your city.

Great pics zoomer. This one in particular looks very out of place - don't see many brick houses in BC: (especially a bay & gable Victorian!)

You’re absolutely right - there are a handful of old brick houses in this neighbourhood, but definitely rare. This one is actually a federally recognized historic place, lol. This site specifically mentions it’s the bay and gable style you’d see in Toronto:

^ Very nice glimpse of the city which still looks great despite the winter. Not something every city can pull off.

For Toronto:

3 touristy things to avoid:

1. Most of our museums can be avoided. They cater to locals with memberships, and are rip offs for one time visitors.
2. Don't eat the ice cream at Sweet Jesus
3. It's getting better, but our Harbourfront is extremely touristy and has bad food options

3 touristy things to check out:

1. Toronto Islands (take the Ward's island ferry to go the best part of the islands)
2. St. Lawrence Market
3. Kensington Market

3 places not on tourist radar:

1. Go to the Beach neighbourhood and walk along the Boardwalk east, ending at the magnificent RC Harris water filtration plant
2. The Cabbagetown neighbourhood, east of Parliament and north of Gerrard is probably our most historically intact and nice to wander around. At its heart is the wonderfully preserved Toronto Necropolis cemetery and Riverdale farm
3. It's not a secret, but if you love urbanism and walking, you should walk the length of Queen West from University to the end at Roncessvalles, about 6km away. There isn't a single dull stretch and, in my opinion, having visited every major Canadian city except Halifax and Winnipeg, this is the best street in Canada.

Love this shot Ricco - nice ‘reflection’ of the green on both sides of the street, good eye!

Bleury 02 by Foofoo MacShoe, on Flickr

Thanks hipster duck, great recommendations - copied and saved for future reference I’d like to check out the Hockey Hall of Fame, but yes, primarily I’m looking for urbanist walking tours where I can meander and discover all day. Throw in a few great skyline overview locations and iconic and impressive architecture where you can sit in a coffee shop, restaurant or public space and soak it all in (New York has so many of these).
