Vintage London & UK 1982

Here's a collection of slides taken back in Fall 1982 in London, plus a few trips to Brighton/Hastings, Edinburgh and York/Whitby/Yorkshire Dales. There's not much I can say about London as its one of the best known cities in the world. I had a fantastic time--it was the era of Dexy's Midnight Runners, The Specials, Soft Cell's "Tainted Love", Eddie Grant's "Electric Avenue", Squeeze, & The Jam. One day in December 1982, I snuck out onto the roof of the Hilton Hotel (at the SE corner of Hyde Park) to try to capture city views of London. I was amazed how easy it was to get up there! Anyway, I hope you enjoy these photos from nearly 40 years ago!

80's and 90's London. Born there. When London was fun and cheap. While number of billionaires may be impressive to read for today, in the 80's London was underground so to speak, lively, busy, excellent public transport, cheap and safe (certainly by any US standards)

Nice photos. When I was growing up in this era London seemed like the ultimate cool place to be.

this is a stunning collection - worthy of an exhibition in my opinion. between the subject matter, your eye, and the general aesthetics and quality of the photos you’ve really got something here.

The exact year of my first trip to London, winter of '81, '82. I still have fond memories of walking in mews around Belgravia, and the great terrace houses all around the West end. An extraordinary city with unmistakeable characteristics. Thanks for reviving memories!

I love London but trying to find my way around without GPS on my iPhone (using Google maps) would have been quite a task, something obviously you lived without during your visit in 1982. The lack of a street grid and instead having to rely on a paper map would have probably cost me quite a lot of time compared to just wandering about like I did back in 2017 using my iPhone. I LOVED exploring that city!

Thanks for all your comments everyone! London has always been one of my favorite cities & I loved my time there. I’ve been back a few times since, but not since 1999. My wife & I were planning to go last year, but COVID put an end to that. Hopefully next year!
Having only been to US or Canadian cities, I was fascinated by how different London was, as it was essentially a series of villages that grew together. I was amazed how one block off the incredibly busy Oxford Street, you could find yourself in a quiet Mayfair residential street — very different from Nicollet Mall, let alone Fifth Avenue in NYC.
Getting around London wasn’t too bad— I had an A to Z London map and got to know the tube lines very well. Plus, their bus routes are clearly marked on maps.

I went through a period as a kid when I was obsessed with the idea of London. It wasn't glamorous in my mind and had pretty much the exact same vibe exuded in these photos. Great stuff.

I don't know if it's just a Commonwealth thing or not, but it seems like a lot of the children's literature & media in particular that we grew up with was British. Probably for that reason, London always loomed large in my mind as a kid as well.
