Hard Rock demolition latest: Developers seek to fell 3 nearby buildings; see reaction

https://www.nola.com/news/article_6a...4fc7d4692.html

The developers of the partially collapsed Hard Rock Hotel in New Orleans are seeking a permit to take down three adjacent buildings as part of their demolition plan for the site, according to permits filed with the city.

The plan would involve tearing down century-old structures — two on Canal Street and one on Iberville Street — that survived the collapse and are owned by the major partners in the Hard Rock project.

Historic preservationists said they are sensitive to the complex challenges of bringing down the rest of the hotel safely and recovering the bodies of two workers that remain in the rubble. But they, along with a City Council member, worry the demolitions may be unnecessary and simply result in more properties being destroyed.

“It’s been a tragedy,” Vieux Carre Property Owners, Residents and Associates Executive Director Erin Holmes said of the collapse. “But we don’t need to continue removing the historic fabric of Canal Street. VCPORA is going to be opposed to any further demolition around the site unless a clear need is demonstrated for their removal.”

Among other projects, Tulane hopes to continue investment downtown, where it already occupies 17 buildings, by becoming an anchor tenant in the redevelopment of the old Charity Hospital. Between that and other downtown expansions, the school aims to take up at least 500,000 square feet of laboratories, clinical space, student housing, classrooms and more.

In doing so, Fitts said, Tulane aims to play an even bigger role in New Orleans, much in the way that he said universities in Pittsburgh and Nashville have revitalized their hometowns and vaulted them to greater national prominence.

"New Orleans is a better and more vibrant city because of Tulane, and Tulane is a better and more attractive university because of New Orleans," he added. "The futures of the two are linked."

Nothing really new in the article (mostly Tulane patting itself on the back or trying to overcompensate for something... can't tell which) but does re-affirm the charity project
I think probably to pre empt any attempt to make them pay property taxes lol

Shell: About 50 New Orleans jobs moving to Houston, but deepwater operations staying

Royal Dutch Shell confirmed on Tuesday that it plans to move about 50 New Orleans-based jobs to Houston next year, but said it is committed to keeping its core deepwater operations in the city long-term.

The company, which is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, said that the jobs being relocated to Shell's North American headquarters in Texas are primarily from the subsurface and seismic processing teams.

A spokesman for Shell in New Orleans, Paul Hagel, said that the job-shuffle is a routine adjustment for the company and should not be seen as affecting the company's long-term commitment to the city as headquarters of its deepwater operations for the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, Malaysia and elsewhere.

"The move is aimed at co-locating teams that are already working together to optimize our footprint and add focus," he said of the jobs relocation.

Shell New Orleans currently employs about 1,000 people, mostly located on nine floors at the Hancock Whitney Center on Poydras Street in the Central Business District, formerly One Shell Square.

Wanted to wish everyone on this forum a Happy New Year! Outside of the Hard Rock hotel collapse, 2019 was a very good year for the region in terms of the economy and development. The biggest project we should see starting up in full swing in 2020 will be the Charity redevelopment.

CONVENTION CENTER BOULEVARD REOPENS
Posted on December 27, 2019

The entire new roadway of Convention Center Boulevard, from Poydras to Henderson Streets has reopened in time for the new year after Entergy finished the installation of new power poles. Originally, the boulevard was scheduled to be closed to vehicular traffic until Tuesday, December 31. The improved boulevard features one lane in each direction with a cobblestone safety strip dividing the two lanes.

“We are excited to announce an earlier-than-anticipated reopening of Convention Center Boulevard to motorists,” said Michael Sawaya, President of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. “This is another major milestone in our $557 million capital improvement plan to make us more competitive for meetings and events and much more appealing to our residents. Our thanks to Entergy and Landis Construction for getting this done sooner than expected.”

The new Convention Center Boulevard, which began construction in September 2018, was the result of several extensive traffic studies that took into consideration the needs of event attendees, cruise ship passengers, warehouse district residents and businesses, commuters to the CBD and port freight traffic. The final plan was reviewed and approved through the normal city permitting process.

With the completion of the improved city side of Convention Center Boulevard, crews will continue work constructing the 7.5 acre Public Park that runs the length of the building.

Key design elements of the park include a tree-lined pedestrian promenade, covered terraces, outdoor event spaces, interactive water features, green walls, shaded communal gathering areas, and public art. The park is currently scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2020. For a list of major construction milestones, visit http://advantagenola.com/major-milestones/.

The newly opened Convention Center Boulevard will continue to serve visitors to the 2019 NOLA ChristmasFest, which continues at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center through December 31, 2019. NOLA Christmasfest is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with special hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. More details about NOLA Christmasfest are available at https://nolachristmasfest.com/

623 Canal Street has a storied past having lived many former lives. It was originally constructed in the late 1800’s as the Bank of Orleans building but in 1896, it was known as Vitascope Hall, the first permanent movie theatre in the United States at a time when movie making was in its infancy. For 10 cents, visitors could check out the new and novel technology of watching motion picture on a big screen.

Today, #teampalmisano is historically resurrecting 623 and neighboring 629 Canal for mixed-use, with ground floor retail and upper-floor residential units. Flip through to see a glimpse into the property’s past including its early life as The Vitascope.
