Oh great, a place like Seattle has it’s beautiful Space Needle and tasteless buffoons in Miami settle for the first ugly POS this guy presents to them.
The FAA says Brickell One at 1049ft is an interference but this giantass 1000ft ugly toenail clipper isn’t?
WTF kind of drugs is the entire city of Miami on?

I hope Berkowitz can never raise the $400 Million from overseas investors to build this "monstrosity" Take this crap to Orlando or Atlantic City!
The FAA recently got more strict. That's why Skyrise had to have their pseudo ground-breaking a few months back, so they could keep their previous FAA approval since they knew under the more strict current rules, they didn't stand a chance of getting approval at 1000 feet. Too bad Swire was a year or so late. Maybe we can have a new referendum to transfer Skyrise's FAA approval to One Brickell CityCentre?

Aw, if they became strict, that spells bad news for One Brickell CityCentre.

Even the city of Miami doesn't like the FAA. If it wasn't for the insurance, they could override any FAA ruling though the city commission.

Wasn't crazy about the design at first, but I am really glad it's going up...! It will be iconic Miami....we have NO observation decks currently...probably one of the only cities without one....and now we will have two going up....pretty happy...!

I'm wondering if this would be classified as a supertall tower? IDK its just that it doesn't necessarily look like a conventional tower even though it is a 1,000ft. I wonder if the supertall guidelines would still classify this as a supertall even though it is an observation tower?

Initial Design For SkyRise Miami’s Lobby Area Includes Reflected Ceiling, VIP Area

Quote:
Preliminary plans for SkyRise Miami’s lobby area have been released by Blitstein Design Associates.

A ‘reflected ceiling’ and large retail space is the highlight of the lobby area. VIPs will avoid the main lobby area altogether with a dedicated entrance and escalators shuttling them to their own VIP elevator lobby.

The project was approved by Miami voters in August.

Tensions sky-high over SkyRise funding

Quote:
The soaring $430 million SkyRise Miami tower hasn’t started construction yet, but it’s already generating considerable controversy over public subsidies for private companies.

Plans call for the building to rise 1,000 feet in the sky with a canopy shielding an amphitheater on Biscayne Bay, according to the projections of developer Jeff Berkowitz. Initially, Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado was on board with the project.

Not anymore. According to an article in the Miami Herald, tensions between the developer and the mayor boiled over after Berkowitz decided to seek millions in public funding. That move is an about face from the developer’s original proposal.

Indeed, Berkowitz has repeatedly pledged that SkyRise would be built at no cost to the city. But the developer recently applied to tap funds from property tax proceeds that are earmarked for economic development.

^ I really don't think he will be able to raise the $430 Million dollars he needs to build this thing. So now he is asking the city of Miami for money after the voters were promised no public funds would be needed?

There's certainly money to be made with the project, its not a dead in the water proposal. I mean you have the observation deck, the base jumping, the restaurant, the ballroom, the tourism.

SkyRise funding stalls

Quote:
SkyRise Miami failed to secure $9 million in county funding Wednesday, after some Miami-Dade commissioners pushed back against public dollars for a project that touted private financing in a recent city referendum.

The planned 1,000-foot observation tower split the 13-member county commission 6-6 on the proposed funding, which is part of a larger economic-development program paid for with property taxes. Commissioner Javier Souto was away from the dais for the well-anticipated vote, and his fellow commissioners agreed to resolve the tie by taking up SkyRise again at a future meeting.

SkyRise has split the county’s political leaders, with Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado urging commissioners to reject county funding for the $430 million project and Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez touting it as a true “game-changer” for the local economy.

“This is an iconic building that will probably end up becoming a symbol of Miami,” Gimenez told commissioners. “The Eiffel Tower of Miami.”

I think you may be right. Its a gridlock right now when it comes to the funding.

Hopefully they figure something out. It would suck if this doesn't workout. Well, from the long term economic benefit for the city based on tax revenue and tourism. While some might oppose it, we have to look at the bigger picture. Developments such as these provide long term jobs, and increased revenue for the city which can yield some much needed tax dollars.

It will be built on public land so there will be no tax revenue, Bayside's rent will increase but not by any useful amount. The jobs will be your usual tourism minimum wage service jobs (think a vertical Walmart when it comes to salaries/jobs), its revenue numbers don't make the slightest bit of sense (it would have to be the most successful observation tower ever to break even). This project is a joke in every way. If Berkowitz wants his tower let him put in on his own private property not public land.
