1984, I believe. The Capitol Centre was topped out (note the tree on its roof). It was finished in 1984, along with 816 Congress across the street.

Just watched the 1991 movie Slacker last Friday, shows old Austin well (West Campus, Downtown, etc). Some scenes I can't make out the location.

At around the 24 minute mark, a boom mike mysteriously drops into the scene. Oh those ugly painted Roy's Taxi's. They once were all over the place along with Checkered. How times have changed.

Here's a pretty good guide to locations. Most are unrecognizable today.

The real "old Austin" died in the early 70s.

Anyone know which road it is they're driving on at 2:10? That oak tree reminds me of the big tree outside Matt's El Rancho on Lamar Blvd. Wonder if it could be the same tree....hah

Wow, I grew up less than 2 miles from there. I recognize the old Pecan Park neighborhood at the bottom. The main street is still there (Pecan Park Blvd), but all the homes were bought out by developers and cleared. Little did the old residents know that their homes would be replaced by an Olive Garden.

That might be one of the most depressing thing I've read on this forum

It looks like a few of those lots are still residential, but I don't recognize the original structures from the photos.

That photo looks like it was taken as the Chase Building was finishing its retrofit from copper glass. It looks like the tower crane is still attached. Or is that the building on Congress behind it? What year was that any way? It feels like generations ago! The whole 5 county metro area probably had 900,000 people back then.

The One American Center was finished '84, so it would have been long finished by the time the Chase Bank Tower was being remodeled. I think what you're seeing there is some artifacts in the photo because Facebook compresses image files.

Lady Bird Johnson standing on the Shoal Creek peninsula. I'm not sure of the exact date, but it's from after 1971 since the RBJ Tower is there.

I remember the Town Lake area looking so bleak and virtually devoid of trees back in 1969-70 when I briefly lived here. I could never have imagined the transformation of the riverfront area into the really lush and beautiful spot it has become. I remember back then thinking that Austin had "good bones" and might one day transform into a real city, but I never really factored Town Lake into that vision. Now it is one of the crown jewels.
