Brooklyn Point Nears Completion In Downtown Brooklyn

Quote:
Work is nearing completion on Extell’s Brooklyn Point, number 26 on YIMBY’s countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in the city. The 68-story, 720-foot-tall skyscraper, which is also addressed as 138 Willoughby Street, is designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and is part of the third and final phase of the City Point complex in Downtown Brooklyn. SLCE Architects is serving as the architect of record, while Katherine Newman is designing the interior spaces. A total of 458 units, ranging from studio to three-bedroom units, will be created.

Brooklyn Point topped out in early 2019 and the western hemisphere’s highest residential infinity pool was installed in two large pieces earlier this summer. The curtain wall is nearly finished, with some exterior pieces near the ground floor yet to be completed. The reinforced concrete superstructure will briefly hold the title as Brooklyn’s current tallest skyscraper.

Bklyn Point and 11 Hoyt began construction around the same time, and from renderings I was convinced 11 Hoyt was the superior design. But in the flesh Bklyn Point is miles better, and the flawless way it's incorporated into City Point makes it the crown jewel in a project I never dreamed would be so perfect for DT. In fact I really can't imagine DT without City Point now. There's even an awesome little bar tucked away in the subterranean market, and one with a museum of oddities upstairs.

I can't wait to lounge at the pool on top of Bklyn Point, I'm determined to befriend an owner in the building just for that purpose.

The big difference being that one is built by a true luxury developer (Extell) and the other is not (Tishman).

Both are some of the biggest developers in the city, can't complain though. Building our skyline, one skyscraper or super tall at a time. Tishman alone transformed LIC for example. Extell set the gears in motion for the 57th Street corridor. Extell seems to attract heavy competition from JDS as well. Skyscraper wars are a good thing!

Skyline is developing "HOWEVER" until 9 Dekalb starts to rise and then eventually "TOPS OUT" nothing distinctive will be recognized and or said by the general public about the Downtown Brooklyn/Borough skyline from an aerial perspective other than what's posted on a blogosphere and until that happens then we'll see architectural critics from the mainstream start to chime in. Right now this skyline is nothing more that a lot of boxy skyscrapers with some mild color distinction. So I hope we're all anxiously awaiting this development so let's get it on JDS. Just my opinion Chris.

DT Brooklyn has grown massively, but it has become so damned ugly. Big blank concrete walls, cheap looking materials, and those horrendous asymmetrical facades that have stained the New York skyline so grievously.

These cheap asymmetrical facades will be seen as the Vanderbilt Condominiums of the 2010-202x period. Even uglier, perhaps. DeBlasio and Cuomo are pathetic puppets.

What are the "Vanderbilt Condominiums" and what do the NYC mayor and NYS governor have to do with architectural designs in downtown Brooklyn?
