This isn't a statistically perfect sample, but the following list of 16 cities is a decent cross-section of American urban areas and includes those located in the Northeast (5), South (4), Midwest (3), and West (4). This compares YTD changes in murders and major crime.

Collectively across the 16 cities, murders are down 11% (903 to 804) and major crimes are up 2% (210.2K to 214.7K). Ten cities are recording drops in murders, five have increases, and one is even. Nine cities have drops in major crime, while seven are recording increases.

Some cities are experiencing massive spikes in auto theft - in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Washington, DC the increases are over 100% - which is skewing some major crime stats, but this isn't a universal trend; In LA, Denver, & Milwaukee, car theft is down substantially.

In Atlanta, murders are down 46% (54 to 29), but major crimes are up 2% (5.9K to 6K).

In Boston, murders are up 50% (8 to 12), but major crimes are down 5% (4.1K to 3.9K).

In Chicago, murders are down 10% (162 to 146), but major crimes are up 45% (14.3K to 20.9K).

In Dallas, murders are up 11% (90 to 100), but major crimes are down 4% (23.8 to 22.9).

In Denver, murders are down 8% (26 to 24) and major crimes are down 13% (15.6K to 13.6K).

In Little Rock, murders are down 30% (14 to 20), and major crimes are down 6% (4.2K to 3.9K).

In Los Angeles, murders are down 29% (107 to 76) and major crimes are down 5% (38.2K to 36.5K).

In Milwaukee, murders are down 28% (58 to 42) and major crimes are down 17% (8.9K to 7.2K).

In Minneapolis, murders are down 36% (22 to 14), but major crimes are up 7.6% (8.9K to 9.6K),

In New York, murders are down 7% (121 to 113), but major crimes are up 1% (34.2K to 34.4K)

In Philadelphia, murders are down 12% (145 to 127), but major crimes are up 20% (20.9K to 25.2K).

In Providence, murders are down 25% (4 to 3) and major crimes are down 23% (1.6K to 1.2K).

In Richmond, murders are up 6% (18 to 19), and major crimes are up 2% (2.6K to 2.7K).

In Salt Lake City, murders are up 67% (3 to 5), but major crimes are down 16% (4.3K to 3.6K).

In San Francisco, murders are even (13), and major crimes are down 10% (15.1K to 13.6K).

In Washington, DC, murders are up 29% (52 to 67) and major crimes are up 25% (7.6K to 9.5K).

London is currently at 38.
Remarkable for a city its size.

Toronto at 22.

I believe both are down ytd vs previous year.

---

Berlin ended 2022 with 38 homicides. Thats a rate of 1.0. Very good.

I am surprised Atlanta is not as dangerous as compared to other cities in absolute numbers. I thought it was in the top 5 most dangerous major cities in the US.

Salt Lake is at their 10th homicide of 2023, which is out-pacing last year's total. It seems like a small number but Salt Lake only has about 200,000 people.

The city of Atlanta is actually pretty small in population, under 500k

The trend line overall from last year is good. The cities seeing increases for the most part have smaller numbers of murders overall (DC excluded). Cities with more murders are consistently seeing fewer --

Boston YTD - 18 (Last Year: 14) +29%

Washington, DC YTD - 111 (Last Year: 98) +13%

San Francisco YTD - 23 (Last Year: 21) +10%

Portland YTD - 36 through May (Last Year: 39) -8%

New York YTD - 177 (Last Year: 197) -10%

Philadelphia YTD - 199 (Last Year: 244) -18%

Los Angeles YTD - 119 (Last Year: 161) -26%

Atlanta YTD - 50 (Last Year: 69) -28%

Minneapolis YTD - 27 (Last Year: 41) -34%

5 dead in shootings this weekend in Austin, including, a murder suicide, which brings the number to 39 dead in Austin this year. Deadliest weekend of 2023.

https://www.kxan.com/news/crime/this...staff-numbers/

Permitless carry hasn't been good for murders in Austin. The murder rate here, particularly gun related, has increased greatly since permitless carry was passed September 1, 2021. Austin had been a relative outlier seeing few murders a year, sometimes with as many as 20 for a whole year. We could see 3 to 4 times that this year at this pace.

Austin is at 40 murders so far this year. I'm sure we'll beat the 2020 number this year, but probably not the 2021 and 2022 numbers. There's a link at the bottom with a map of where they've happened this year, plus a list of the years going back to 1981. We're hovering around 4 to 6 a month, so we could see 64 total this year at this pace. That isn't too much higher than the bad years we had in the mid 1980s.

Philadelphia as of 8/11

2023 - 258
2022 - 338
2021 - 329
2020 - 261

Still a little high for where it should be this time of year, but heading in the right direction thankfully.

Philly is the most improved major city in homicides if you consider the drop in numbers compared to last year. I checked and no other large city has over 20% reduction from 2022 and some places like DC and Boston are drastically increasing. Hopefully we can reverse the image of Philly being "dangerous" and realize it's doing much better compared to the rest of the East Coast.

I can't be certain but I'm confident we'll see Philly below 200 some time after 2026, when the 250th celebration of the US will put the city on the world's spotlight, more than the Pope's visit did.

Its most improved percentage wise because it's starting from such a ridiculously high number compared to almost any city.

I'm glad it's improving but let's keep it real

Exactly. And some of this is just "luck", where the intended targets didn't die from their wounds. There's well over 1000 shootings already this year which is still insanity.

But that’s typical of every year.

Deaths rates from gunshots are consistently about 20% in every major city with timely 911 and a major trauma hospital.

If gun homicides have fallen, then shootings must also have fallen. “Luck” rates don’t change from year to year.

So Philadelphia has had a large decrease, but unclear at this point whether it’s the start of a major decline or just a return to the Philadelphia pre-pandemic mean.
