Not many other options there.

I am absolutely not a believer that residential is a good replacement for office as far as downtown retail goes. That said, LaSalle St. doesn’t have quite as much street-facing retail as other downtown corridors.

Since the older buildings are quite obsolete as office workplaces, yet still irreplaceable works of art, it leaves residential or hotel as the remaining realistic options.

A lot of these buildings are conducive to residential. For example, the old Bank of America building would make for some great condos with shallow floorplates and windows everywhere. I would imagine as a developer it would be attractive having residential units where every room has windows.

I think if The Rookery were converted to condos it would probably be one of the most desirable buildings to live in in the city.

Ultra posh hotel with upscale restaurant for all the LaSalle Street suits (and their mistresses)

Mr. Chicago here,
Well if all else fails and if the Bears move out of Chicago, why not scrape that cereal bowl out of Soldier Field , cover the field, build some high rise on it
and, bingo, there is your casino. Imagine a rooftop garden with a restaurant and entertainment center.
I do have a confession. When i first learned of a possible casino in Chicago,
I was disappointed. A casino takes from the dignity of a city that included the likes of Friedman, Fermi, F.L. Wright, Studs Turkel, Marshall Field , etc. I know a casino is a money maker for a short while, but why place Chicago with some other gambling mecca?

OrdoSeclorum here, Mr. Chicago. It isn't really a big deal, but it is not necessary to announce yourself when you post. Your experience shouting instructions to trapped miners through a narrow air tube, or negotiating for the release of hostages over the phone in the bank manager's office may not have been the best preparation for posting here.

Chicago being a highly political city could the calculation be that choosing the 78 Rivers Casino carries the least political risk. White, Hispanic, and Black communities carrying equally greater political empowerment and the Asian-American community by far the least. It may not turn out this way, but just saying, it could be a part of the equation.

Pat Dowell has expressed that the 78 site has received more disdain than even the One Central site. From a politics perspective, I still don't see the 78 working out unless Ald. Dowell or Ald. Byron-Sigcho suddenly have a change of heart

Bally’s Chicago Tribune site is set to be the final choice. Now to the council.
Burnett is a definite yea vote.

While the 78 is still kinda my favorite, I am very happy to hear Bally's is moving forward. I would have been super disappointed with Hard Rock, so good to hear the city is making a wise choice.

No complaints here! That was quicker than I expected in terms of a finalist being determined.

Dead zone gets new life and connects some of the city's most popular neighborhoods, sounds good to me. Underwhelming design compared to the 78, but maybe that can still be addressed.

I live in River North and am part of the target demographic and still do not want it there. The 78 or McCormick make way more sense logistically. I would go to those on occasion with friends (and the city generally needs the tax $).

It will be secure inside, for sure, but degenerate gamblers & thugs will stumble across the new bridge to Ward Park, yikes. If you want a quick foreshadowing, just walk down state between the two 7-11's, Snickers, and Rossi's...

Oh an property values will definitely drop too. The construction will take a while, but will likely accelerate my move to a townhouse in Bucktown, Wicker, or LP, etc.

Shapack just bought the Salvation Army site with plans to turn into a hotel. Wonder if they got the heads up?

^ BVictor1 posted in the highrise thread that Onni is buying Bally's temporary casino site. Starting to feel like River West is the new Fulton Market
