If taxes were low but the risk of losing everything in a flood was high, I don't think Manitoba would be all that much better off. One of the biggest complains from business about Thunder Bay? It's not the tax rate, it's the state of infrastructure.

competitive firms growing the tax base is important (shown today by boeing), but as we live in the city we do: major flood zone, infrastructure deficit, demographic problems, etc., these firms have to realize that by paying their taxes they are voting to support all of this and they know it. but for some reason they still operate (and in many cases grow) here... why? [location?]

and about the mom and pops: if you can operate in the Winnipeg market, you can operate anywhere, right? (new cabella's Canadian hq. speaks to this..). there is money to be made here, and if you're smart you can also partake in some of it despite the tax structure

Manitoba's economic growth second only to Alberta

Manitoba had one of the two best-performing provincial economies in the country in 2012, with 2.7 per cent growth, according to preliminary year-end numbers released today by Statistics Canada.
The agency said Alberta was the only province to turn in stronger real gross domestic product (GDP) growth last year, with 3.9 per cent.

Richardson completes elevator, crop centre acquisition from Viterra

Winnipeg-based Richardson International Limited has finally closed on its acquisition of 19 country elevators and 13 crop input centres formerly owned and operated by Viterra.

The $800 million-plus deal was originally announced more than a year ago in conjunction with Glencore International’s purchase of Viterra Inc.

The new facilities will be added to Richardson Pioneer’s network of grain handling and crop input facilities across Western Canada.

be nice if they filled some already vacant office space downtown, perhaps in one of the many vacant heritage office conversions still in need of tenants

Hey good news, IT jobs average anywhere from 33,000 -70,000 + in canada....It also makes sense as this demographic is most likely to go Condo and live dowtown imo....

Perhaps this will kickstart more I.T. jobs coming to the downtown area, and like was mentionned, with all the new condo development occuring, I think this will be a perfect fit. We need more high-paying jobs in this city.

It is a major data centre in the AirCanada Building i believe. Big dollar figure.

IT jobs can be real low $14/hr or real high $50+/hr - really depends on what they bring to the table. it might be a glorified call center

It is a Data Centre, not a Call Centre.

If you actually read the press release you would realize that it will be their national data center. 20X more computing power and 10X more bandwidth than all of their current data centers combined.

They wouldn't be spending the money to be in the Air Canada building if they were just putting 50 people behind phones.

I'm going to guess that they are taking over the space that CP Rail had in the Air Canada Building?
