except of course that the distances involved are nowhere close to being similar. downtown milwaukee is 80 miles from downtown chicago and has been independently and organically growing as its own urban center for almost 200 years now, whereas the major suburban highrise nodes of toronto (scarborough, north york, mississauga, etc.) are anywhere from 7 to 15 miles from downtown toronto and are a decidedly post-war phenomenon entirely dependent on their central city. walking through downtown milwaukee and walking down hurontario street in mississauga are
RADICALLY different experiences. it's not that the suburban highrise nodes of metro toronto aren't cool in their own way, they're just very, very different from an actual 200 year old urban center like downtown milwaukee.
if milwaukee we're located where evanston is and was a cornfield as recently as WWII, then perhaps the comparison would be apt.
