How do you know it's a good smog day?

When I first started going to LA in the 70s, the air was like that nearly every day, and usually much worse. It took a lot of work and cooperation between CARB and EPA to make the tremendous progress since then. Still could be better, of course. Younger people have no idea how bad things used to be there and in most other U.S. cities.

Is that Los Angeles one definitely from Griffith Observatory, and not slightly west? I cannot find the Los Feliz Theater, with its distinctive marquee and neon purple lighting (although I know it's daytime here).

It's from Griffith. The Los Feliz theater is to the left of the red brick building before the medical complex--follow the tree line to the left. The real question is whether it was cloudy, foggy, or otherwise humid the day he took it. I don't remember any bad smog days in the last couple of months.

^ It was damp and humid that day so visibility was not that great and also I edited the pic in post to bring out the skyline which would have been washed out.

Here's another SF from about 30 miles...earth curves so much you can't even see the San Mateo bridge or the roadway on the BB which is ~200' above the bay...

I'm really surprised that one can see across Lake Erie.

That Cleveland pic is amazing. It almost looks like Chicago from across Lake Michigan.
