Along with Seattle it does seem that the Indian population in SF/SJ is almost entirely because of the tech industry.

Surely, both South and East Asians had their communities arrived across the Pacific and naturally had their immigration gateway closer to the coast than inland, right?

Suburban South Asian Canadians are more middle class or lower middle class/working class/manual laborers, and South Asian Americans are more upper middle class/professional, but for some reason, both are more suburban than urban.

So what explains this? It's not income alone, otherwise, you'd have well-off South Asians in the US in cities too, just like well-off whites or east Asians, or more working class South Asians in cities in Canada too, just like the working class of other minorities.

Do South Asians have a strong cultural preference for home ownership?

In California it does seem Sikhs are much more working class than Hindus who tend to be upper middle class professionals. Communities in the Central Valley for instance.

The quality of life in Indian cities is very poor so if you have an association of urbanism with poverty your more likely to avoid the urban core. However there's also a trend of Chinese immigrants to the suburbs as well.

Anything for Asian and African growth for Columbus..or a link to where I can find the info? I know we have gotten Nepalese/Bhutanese and some more Somalians I believe.
Interesting how Columbus has had higher numerical growth in blacks than in whites. about a 10,000 difference. I wonder if they are coming from NE Ohio or from out of state?

Downtown LA residential population was 52% white in 2013. I'm sure it's passed 60% or 65% in the past 6 years.
There's only certain sections that feel Mexican and streets like Broadway are changing dramatically.

I'm not talking about residential population, obviously. Residential population has little to do with a downtown core's overall usage.

LA's downtown has tons of Asians and Latinos, as they work and/or shop there.

Im sure the office workers lean more white than Hispanic too so I'm not sure what you're getting at.
Shopping I give you, but that's it.
I go there all the time and see a solid mix more than anything.

Interesting that Chinese growth is adhering to traditionally populous Chinese areas, whereas Vietnamese, Korean, and Other are shifting towards areas where you would not expect to find many Asians, like DFW and Houston (although Houston has always had a significant Vietnamese population, the trend is continuing, and now outpacing LA and SF) .

interesting to note that korean immigration to atlanta has slowed, but has increased from other countries. (china, vietnam especially) also interesting that we're surpassing some more established areas like chicago/boston/dc.

Atlanta has had a sizeable Korean community for a while. It was there where I first got exposed to Korean culture via taekwondo for a short time.

I’m surprised that the data for the different Asian demographics don’t include any Florida metro. I know Miami virtually no Asian community, but doesn’t Orlando and possibly the Tampa Bay Area have a good sized Filipino population? I know a bunch of friends from those areas. Florida may not be as rich or prosperous as NY or CA, but the weather there is almost the same as the humid weather of Southeast Asia. Thus, a lot of Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese, and Indonesians would feel just as home there as the large Caribbean population does right now.

I would not read too much into the year-over-year estimates.

These are very rough estimates, usually heavily revised during the decennial Census count, and the Census says not to take year-over-year results as a trend, but rather a rough overall point-in-time snapshot.

True, but we are still on the verge of a shift nonetheless.

Miami's Asian communities seem to be spread out with no center.
Orlando does seem to have a visible Vietnamese population with many restaurants & shops in the ViMi (Virginia-Mills) district northeast of downtown.
