Winston Square Park

Inspired by Japanese water gardens, the park and outdoor performance space opened in August 1982. The opening event was a Festival of the Elements (Air - Water - Earth - Fire), sponsored by Japan Airlines, that had Japanese films, dancing, music, food, arts, and crafts. In addition to a performance stage, the park features an overhead walkway (to look down on the water feature and stage from), waterfall, a bridge, and trees. The bridge is a symbol of leaving troubles behind. Winston-Salem resident (who sadly passed a few years ago) Maya Angelou held a discussion on Japanese poetry during the events. Noteworthy artists also visited from Japan as part of the opening day events.

During the summer, people will look down on the street festivals/concerts from the overhead walkway and kids will run through the rocks and falls in the park.
