So Sky Harbor will see no more 747's coming in? Well that sucks. I go to sky Harbor on occasion just to watch the BA 747's arrive.

It's big, but still not as big as a 747.

Yes, I did! I saw 777-200ER aircraft by last week. I visited other entire concourse to see any aircraft incoming from overseas flight. When I flew out from PHX. I flew to LAS to see my sister for a few days.

Right! It's Terminal 5 at Heathrow, not Sky Harbor.

Yeah, I will miss 747 very much. No more 747-400 aircraft. She will be retired soon. I flew on 747-400 for 4 times.

I will miss the 747 too. I have some good and not so great trip memories about them.

My very first time on a 747 was with Pan Am when they operated troop flights to Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. That flight felt like the longest flight ever and there was nothing extravagant about it other than it was a big bird. I was 18, had never flown on an overseas flight and obviously had no idea what to expect in that entire situation once we landed.

In 1995, I flew with a friend to Athens. We extended our trip for a week to Mykonos - well worth it! The trip back was quite long. One of my friends stateside worked for an airlines and adjusted the flights back, but somehow that got screwed up. After a long night of partying, my friend misplaced his passport, so I ended up flying back the following morning myself. Mykonos to Athens - 3 hour layover. Athens to JFK on Olympic Airways 747 ended up being diverted to Boston instead. The plane sure did rattle a lot and was so empty that it felt creepy. I thought it best to try to sleep my way through the flight and was able to lie down across 4 middle seats of my choice. Once in Boston, I was able to find a short hop to JFK, but missed my connection to Vegas. I got a later flight to Vegas and then subsequently took my last flight back to Tucson. When all was said and done, Olympic lost my luggage for 2 weeks.

Another long trip was to Sydney and Asia in '97. I took a flight from Tucson to PHX - two hour layover. PHX to Denver - 3 hour layover. Denver to LAX - 5 hour layover. Then 16 hour flight to Sydney on Quantas 747. The flight was great, but super long. Damn woman sitting next to me wouldn't turn off her light, so hard to rest. When we arrived to Sydney, we couldn't check into our hotel because a student demonstration was happening right outside of the hotel (students were protesting for free education). They stormed the hotel. I was livid at that point. Later in trip, took Quantas 747 to Singapore. Singapore Airlines 747 to Hong Kong (best service ever). Later, Japan Airlines 747 to Narita. United Airlines 747 from Narita to Honolulu - the worst turbulence ever 3 or so hours nonstop - this happened a few weeks later: https://www.nytimes.com/1997/12/29/w...oman-dies.html

I've also flown 747s from Atlanta to Amsterdam (KLM - good service), and Phoenix to London on BA. No major complaints.

Short-haul airline to launch jet flights from Phoenix

Quote:
JetSuiteX, a Dallas-based airline that sells individual tickets on private jet-sized planes, will start operating out of Phoenix starting this fall.

JetSuiteX will operate flights from Swift Aviation, located on the southwest side of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The carrier will begin multiple daily flights out of Phoenix to Burbank, California, starting Aug. 30, Las Vegas starting Sept. 12, and Oakland, California, starting Oct. 1. Flights out of Phoenix are available to be booked on the company’s website.

Flights start at $79 one-way on the 30-seat Embraer 135 jets.

Phoenix will be the company’s seventh destination. It already flies to Burbank, Concord/East Bay, Las Vegas, Orange County, Oakland and Seattle. JetSuiteX is expected to start flying between Seattle to Oakland on July 1.

JetSuiteX flies from private terminals and says passengers can show up just 20 minutes before their departure — for pre-flight cocktails. The airline also offers seasonal flights to Coachella Valley/Thermal and Mammoth in California.

The airline also charters its jets for group trips, corporate events or other travel.

JetSuiteX is trying to exploit what CEO Alex Wilcox thinks is a market inefficiency as major carriers turn away from short-haul flights. Wilcox previously told the Dallas Business Journal, an affiliated publication of the Phoenix Business Journal, that he thinks JetSuiteX can become a $1 billion business.

JetSuiteX is part of California-based JetSuite Inc., which also has a brand called JetSuite.

Sun Country adds Phoenix-Las Vegas flights with one-way fares from $39

Quote:
Thought your luck had run out on finding inexpensive flights to Las Vegas? Sun Country Airlines could tip the odds in your favor.

The Minneapolis-based airline announced Tuesday that it will add flights between Phoenix and Las Vegas starting in September. The nonstop service between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and McCarran International Airport begins Sept. 5 with fares starting from $39 one way.

The flights already are available to book online on the airline's website. While Sun Country says it has fares as low as $39 one way, a quick check seemed to show most flights hovering around $48 one way. For comparison, in a quick check of legacy airlines we spotted fares for $120 round trip for the same dates

The Sun Country route targets leisure travelers: Flights will operate on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The airline also announced service between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In a emailed statement, Chief Revenue Officer Grant Whitney said, “We’ve seen great success with service to and from McCarran International Airport and are thrilled to offer customers these new flights to Los Angeles and Phoenix.”

Whats with all the new flights? We just have more money now? The increased population?

https://azbigmedia.com/condor-extend...nkfurt-flight/

Condor Airlines continues to see strong demand with its nonstop Phoenix-Frankfurt flight, and as a result, has extended its service in 2020. Next year, Condor will expand its current service, adding two days a week for the month of April, then continue its three day a week service from May to October.

“Nonstop international flights, like those offered by Condor, don’t just mean that travelers have more options when taking off from Sky Harbor,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “These flights also give international visitors easier access to our city and this brings more jobs through trade and tourism. Our city’s airports already have a monumental impact on our region’s economy and now, even more visitors will be able to take part in the amazing things happening in our city.”

Condor Airlines began nonstop seasonal service from Phoenix Sky Harbor to Frankfurt in May 2018. Last June, the airline announced that it would extend its 2019 seasonal service by two full months to include all of May and October. Now, as a result of continued demand, the airline is further extending its service.

Condor Airlines, which is part of the Thomas Cook Group, will continue to operate the flight with a Boeing 767-300ER. This aircraft offers more than 250 seats. Each passenger on board receives complimentary checked baggage, beverages, meals and in-flight entertainment at each seat. The 18 seats in Business Class feature lie-flat seats, a 15” personal in-seat premium entertainment system, power and USB ports, and gourmet meals with complimentary beer, wine and cocktails.

This service will continue to provide both business and leisure travelers a convenient option to getting to Europe. Those travelers looking to fly to other European destinations will find Condor’s schedule and route offerings to 90 destinations from Frankfurt, make it easy and time-effective to get to where they want to go. The flight will also continue to provide a boost to the Arizona economy. In fact, international flights to Phoenix bring in approximately $3 billion each year.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport continues to focus on bringing new flight options to travelers. In addition to the extended Frankfurt service, Phoenix has seen new service from American Airlines to London, new service to Puerto Vallarta on Volaris, and increased service to Montreal on Air Canada. Phoenix Sky Harbor is not only America’s Friendliest Airport®, but a convenient international gateway to destinations across the US and abroad with flights to more than 100 domestic destinations and 23 international destinations. For more information on new flight options, please visit skyharbor.com/flyphx.

Condor’s flight can be booked online at www.condor.com or by telephone 1‐866‐960‐7915.

Maybe both.

Remember - Lufthansa used to fly out of PHX back before the economy tanked. But our population continues to grow - and we still have one of the 7 wonders of the world in our state. AZ remains a 'highly unique' place and curiosity to many outside the country. Just is not easy to get them here - though that seems to be changing. One hops from London and Frankfurt help a lot.

IIRC - Paris is the #2 international destination behind London in Europe for travelers originating from PHX. Also - Korean Airlines is training pilots in Prescott @ Embry Riddle University. So perhaps we can see flights to Paris and Seoul in our future. But we may need more wide body capacity and slightly more business travel to those locations to justify new, direct routes.

I would think a direct flight to New Dehli or Mumbai as well we have a big population of Indian/Bangladeshi expats in Arizona.

Nice! Let see what happens. If this route has done extremely very well. I was hoping Delta, Spirit or Frontier to bring PHX-LAS in near the future.

Is that is quicker to fly into Vegas to see it plus you get the shows and gambling of Vegas. This was mentioned recently in regards to getting flights here from Asia.

Seeing the canyon (south rim) after flying into Vegas isn't any quicker than driving up from Phoenix. They're both around the same time. The bonus is - you get to see the Sonoran desert vs Mojave, Sedona and other sites along the way. Its a marketing thing the state needs to address.

If people want Vegas for gambling and shows - sure it makes sense to fly there. But gambling is becoming more widespread - so how long will that be sustainable?

I'd rather have Asia flights direct to PHX because we are doing a lot of business there rather than tourist dollars to be honest. Would be another positive sign that Phoenix is further maturing as a region.

It's becoming more widespread, but only in a limited capacity (i.e. on Reservations, states that only allow 1 gambling establishment per major city, etc.). Nowhere else in the country will you find gambling in the density that Vegas has or the size of Vegas casino's.

I think thats generally on track, we are just now really dabbling in international flights, we probably wont need a full international terminal for 20 years.

And as far away as it sounds planning for a new terminal in 2039 will begin in ~12 years.

I like the trenching of the railroad tracks. That could eventually tie into commuter rail.

Yeah that would be a nice development. I also liked connecting T3/T4 behind security
