I’m always jealous of Vancouver this time of year - especially of those shots with the palm trees.

I love how slowly spring rolls out on the west coast, it starts in February sometimes sooner and lasts about 2 months. Out east it can roll in early or late but generally last about 3-4 weeks at most.

ya, it's my favourite season. March April is like daffodils, cherry blossoms and magnolias. Next month will be the tulips, azaleas and rhodos etc.

Greet photos SpongeG. I always get a chuckle how people in Vancouver, (maybe everywhere these days?) even surrounded by relative elegance, still look like they are dressed for backpacking, or roughing it, somewhere, through the country.

Tragic loss of a landmark of this scale. I'm honestly surprsied this doesn't happen more often with such old structures

Tragic indeed and I hope they can bring it back to it's former glory. One thing I find funny, well maybe more sad is that within 24 hrs over 1 billion dollars was raised from around the globe to rebuild a structure in a wealthy nation. Meanwhile in the 3rd world countries................................crickets when it comes to humanitarian crisis. I'm not faulting Notre-Dame for having so many people donate to it, but if we can open our wallets to help bring back a structure why can't we help out around the world just as generously?

Going out on a limb here but I'd wager that the amount that gets donated to charities intended to help people blows building restoration donations clear out of the water. Like by orders of magnitude.

But because the French people have rallied to save this one particular building of great national significance, there is suddenly a problem?

This is a very valid debate. I work in landscape conservation, and believe me, we have way more difficulty to convince people that the rivers and forests around flat Montreal are valuable enough to be preserved, while we have no difficulty at all to get money or private land owners to preserve the Appalachian summits. Public "sympathy" goes to the beautiful... A biologist I know, working for the Ministère de la Faune, des Forêts et des Parcs, has the same struggle : he has got tons of provincial and privately-raised funds to preserve the royal eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and almost none for the poor, rather essential (and ugly-ish) mountain salamander (Desmognathus ochrophaeus)... That's how people work, unfortunately.

The immediacy and amount of funds raised is quite impressive. Much more impressive than what charities would receive during a similar snapshot in time (ice bucket challenge notwithstanding).

We all fear God more than ourselves, I guess.

New bicycle rack installed on the street next to the plaza in front of city hall in Moncton NB

from Mayor Dawn Arnold's FB page

The mayor is a cycling activist, and, when conditions allows, commutes about 12 km to city hall from her home in the northwest end via bicycle on the city's extensive biking and pedestrian trail system. She would be able to make it 80-90% of the way without having to cycle on the street grid.

Since the rack is located on the street, the metal car silhouette is designed to protect the bicycles from passing car traffic.
