Uptown Manhattan is not known for its skyline. Perhaps this could change that.

“Radio Tower & Hotel” Breaks Ground at 2420 Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights, Manhattan

This :snicker-chortle: "proposal" would be positively laughed out of the studio of even the most imbalanced, legend-in-his-own-mind designer high-rise architect, be it here or the planet Neptune.

It is neither quaint nor kitschy, innovative nor inviting, completely unwelcome in any imaginable urban or suburban context one would wish have spring to mind. Matter of fact, it looks like something I personally would like to think deserves its own ranch somewhere in the Rio Grande Valley as a treatment center for bipolar rodeo clowns.

I don't know exactly how I feel about this. It seems like the coloration could be fun and interesting but at the same time to have that color be so permanent, as opposed to say white glazed brick with thousands of embedded LED's where they could turn them off and on and change the coloration, is quite the risk taking.

Without the color I like the scale and proportions. Honestly, the color doesn't bother me, it's more so the material. Glazed brick is very tricky; I find it better served as an elegant feature, not as a massive blanket/facade. When you go that route, especially with generic coloring, it tends to scream subway/student center more so. Hopefully it comes out decent.

Now that i think of it, this thing is probably in the new Spider Man movie.

The balls on this developer though cannot be measured. If you think the outside looks like alice in wonderland check out the interior pics.

That being said, I wish they had built something less garish BUT at the same time I don't hate it the actual architecture. I'm pretty much pro-glazed brick so it's hard to dislike it too much for that reason alone. I think they may have been going for an allusion to Wash Heights culturally appropriate "latin island" colors but I don't think it fits in any way with the existing built environment that makes Upper Manhattan so beautiful. I think it would have been a better building in Times Square or Williamsburg or something where the avant garde would be more welcome.

I like it. Seems very Rotterdam avant-garde. The materials could be better, and the blank wall is ugly, but I like the color scheme.

It's not great on its own, but compared to most new hotels in the city (which are Gene Kaufman or Peter Poon junk), it's a masterpiece.

i often went by this all the time for work on the way to morris heights and watched it go up.

it's pretty imposing.

i still dont know what to think of it.

i like it as much as i dislike it.

i admire them going bold, or sorta bold anyway, at least with the colors.

it took up a prominent and underused corner with a gas station on it, so regardless of its towering and colorful looks, its a good thing and so that is what i think about it the most.

i just hope they can fill it up because these days who knows with streelevel retail and offices.

i doubt the hotel works -- there is a new hotel just across the street from it on 181st that immediately changed hands several times and went bust.

i didn't know it had a moniker -- we just called it the new storage tower building lol.
