Photo Contest #45 - Urban Exploration [voting]

Another great turnout to start the calendar year everyone.



1 - Taken December 2006. The 1st 2-story home in calgary, abandoned, then taken over by drug addicts, then adandoned again. Its a historic site so they cant tear it down. All around it is development, Arriva, stampede expansion, and keynote will be closest.

9 - The Buffalo Central Terminal, abandoned in 1979, vacant since. Check out the entire kick-ass photo thread.


10 - This is the Zodiac Lounge in the now vacant Dallas Grand, formerly the Statler Hilton. During its heyday, this is where money would stay in Dallas.. In addition to its long list of celebrity guests, the motion picture “The Giant”, staring James Dean was filmed here. ---- This photo is looking south through the lounge. The crazy fireplace in the background you see replaced a motorized stage that would lift entertainment from the floor below. Elvis sang on that very stage a number of times. Evidently, he stayed at the Statler quite often. The Dallas Grand has been vacant since 1999. It's rooms are still guest-ready with the exception of a little dust. It makes for a very eerie scene.

Maybe it's the mixture of sun and ominous clouds, but I picked #3.

I had to pick number 8 since its mine. You all really should take a look at the thread before you vote, so you can appreciate just how old, hard and gordious the entire building is.

2 - Nice patterns and texture. I'm not a fan of any of the abandoned building photographs.

I concur. While simple, the composition of #2 is the best IMO.

Number 3 looks very familiar to me. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the building at the pool where I went swimming during my childhood. Hoyt Park. Weird.

Tough call. I ended up going with #9. After voting, I saw that many others had reached the same conclusion.

I don't have an entry in this one. I had no suitable pictures on hand, and no opportunities to take one.

No kidding? That's absolutely correct. I spent a lot of time there back when I lived on 83rd street. It closed a few years ago because of skyrocketing maintenance costs. I'm gonna put up a thread with all my pics from that expedition soon...

That's insane. After living on 44th and Chambers in Milwaukee, my family moved to Wauwatosa, where I grew up. My parents still live on Lefeber and Meinecke. During the summer, I literally spent every day at Hoyt when I was younger. Hell, I was going there even before they put the huge slides in. It's really unfortunate that it will never reopen again. The place was an institution. I was actually just there when I was in Milwaukee over Thanksgiving. I hadn't been there in probably 15 years (I'm 28). It was really strange and sad seeing what's become of the place. I can remember this wonderful pool during the summertime. Sparkling blue water. People everywhere. And then I found myself staring at this exposed, overgrown expanse of decrepit concrete.
