Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and the largest in Asia. At the geographic centre of Maritime Southeast Asia, in relation to major Indonesian islands, it is located north of Java, west of Sulawesi, and east of Sumatra. The island is politically divided among three countries: Malaysia and Brunei in the north, and Indonesia to the south. Approximately 73% of the island is Indonesian territory. In the north, the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak make up about 26% of the island. Additionally, the Malaysian federal territory of Labuan is situated on a small island just off the coast of Borneo. The sovereign state of Brunei, located on the north coast, comprises about 1% of Borneo's land area. A little more than half of the island is in the Northern Hemisphere including Brunei and the Malaysian portion, while the Indonesian portion spans both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

Sarawak’s move into electric-powered bus services a smart approach
BY SHARON KONG ON MARCH 5, 2021, FRIDAY AT 12:23 PM

Gemilang International designs and manufactures bus bodies, and has assembled buses for over 30 years in the industry.
Quote:
KUCHING: Sarawak’s move into providing electric-powered bus services is a smart approach to test out a modern and eco-friendly transit solution while boosting its tourism activity, opined Gemilang International Ltd (Gemilang International).

This comes as Sarawak launched a pilot project for electric-powered bus services, of which four units were delivered by the company in the initial stage.

To note, the four units of electric buses has started operating in Kuching on March 3 with 107 bus stops serving the routes between the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) complex to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre.

According to state Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak was the first state in the country to offer the electric bus service to both tourists and locals and the idea of free electric city bus service was first mooted by his ministry under the guidance of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Technological Efforts: Forest Management in Sarawak, Enforcement and Hyperspectral Technology
POSTED ON APRIL 21, 2021, WEDNESDAY AT 12:37 AM

The image on the left is derived from a hyperspectral sensor over a planted forest site which shows the pre-visual symptoms (light colored crowns) of trees that were infected by Ceratosystis sp. in contrast to the image on the right that was taken over the same area using a drone-based camera where only trees showing visible symptoms (late chlorosis) are detected.

Quote:
In recent years, Forest Department Sarawak has achieved excellence in the management and conservation of tropical forests. Through various initiatives, it manages and develops forest resources for social-economic and environmental responsibility. To date Sarawak has a total landmass of 12.4 million hectares, with 62 percent of it covered in forest cover, and significant efforts are being made to safeguard the state’s valuable natural resources. Managing such resources poses numerous challenges because of the geographical factors as mountainous terrains, numerous rivers and tributaries and in most cases, the poor conditions of the roads make access a nightmare.

Sabah developing large-scale smart paddy field programme
POSTED ON AUGUST 4, 2021, WEDNESDAY AT 9:12 PM
Quote:
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is one of four states selected by Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas) to develop the Large-Scale SMART Paddy Field (SBB) programme as a commitment to formulating a strategic direction to strengthen the country’s rice industry.

In a statement, Bernas said the potential paddy areas that have been identified for developing the SMART SBB in Sabah are Kampung Kulambai, Kota Belud; Batang Lupar in Sarawak; Sungai Batu Pahat in Perlis and Setiu in Terengganu.

“The SMART SBB programme is in line with the government’s goal of increasing the country’s rice self-sufficiency rate to 75 per cent, and it began with a memorandum of understanding signed between Bernas and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI) at the beginning of the year.

“It is one of MAFI’s initiatives to consolidate paddy land to create a centralised plantation management system. This centralised system is seen to be able to optimise the use of existing resources as well as increase the efficiency of cultivation activities and padi production in the country.

“As a company with extensive experience and a strong network in the industry, Bernas is targeting areas with low productivity by projecting revenue spikes of between 40 and 60 per cent per season,” it said.

According to Bernas, SMART SBB is a collaborative programme between Bernas and other agencies such as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Sabah Agriculture Department, Area Farmers Organisation and Integrated Agricultural Development Area.

In addition, Bernas is implementing SMART SBB with Bumiputera rice millers such as in the programme between Bernas and Beras Dibuk mill in Perlis and currently, the infrastructure rehabilitation and land works and paddy cultivation are being actively carried out in the identified areas.
