I left my Heart in Quincy?!!??

One of the first stops on my trip through the midwest was Quincy, Illinois. I had seen a couple of threads here about Quincy (Thundertubs did one a while back), and decided I had to check it out some day. The city has about 41,000 the micropolitan area has about 77,000. After some decline the city has made modest population gains the last two census. A Mississippi riverport, Quincy has a great stock of old buildings, though there are a bunch of empties and vacant lots. Not sure why I was so taken with the city, but I did enjoy my too brief tour. More pics and comments in this thread than previous, but what the heck.

Very well represented in this thread!! Quite a few gems in the downtown area. Empty, sure. But cleaned up fairly well. There were a few nice houses that you shot as well!! Thanks for the tour!!

exactly the word that kept coming to mind while scrolling through the pics.

looks much bigger than its population of 41,000 would lead one to believe.

i drove through briefly, but would love to explore some more. i believe there is an amtrak line that goes there from chicago.

absolutely fantastic thread. thanks for sharing. the amount of substantial 19th/early 20th century masonry building stock is impressive for such a small city. the city forefathers were certainly dreaming big and obviously expected quincy to become a place of more consequence than it ended up becoming.

WOW! i've seen a lot of bad in my day, but this might just be the worst building i've ever seen. i mean, you have to have a grudge against humanity itself to design a building that awful.

junior draftsmen: "do you think the people who use this building might want some bigger windows for daylight?"

architect: "no! make the windows as inhumanely small as possible."

Hey guys, thanks for the comments. I could have explored the city for at least another day.

I agree that the building in pic 47 is ...... shall I say "strange" looking. But the one in pic 33 is a disgrace for what the NBC station did to the first floor.

I've been through Quincy twice. It's such a quintessential Midwestern river city. Some of the best architecture in Illinois (except for that thing in pic 47). Great tour, Ith.

I was going through these photos thinking this town has a really fantastic stock of buildings.....#47 momentarily ruined the moment. It looks like a senior detention center.
Great thread, Tom.

Thumbs up Home Sweet Home!

Was born in Quincy. This was fun to look at. I went back to Quincy every Summer to stay with my Granny. She lived across from the Masonic Lodge. I sat on the shoe in the statue at Washington park and went to Washington Theater every weekend with .25. These were times I never want to forget. Great town I was never afraid to walk uptown alone. The firework on the River at the fourth were awesome!

We basically have to go to Quincy to do any shopping. It's a neat little city. A couple times a year they will do a historic homes tour which I highly recommend checking out.
