Napoli - Italy's Delicious Mess

Napoli is fascinating. Despite having what amounts to one of the worst reputations in Europe as a place to spend time, I found it to be an extremely complex, dynamic, and memorable place. My family and I spent October on the Amalfi Coast and used Naples as a jumping point to other locales. Combined with other trips, I’ve now been there five brief times.

I’m not presenting this as some sort of comprehensive look at the city, quite honestly I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface. We were always told by everyone, including my wife’s local family, that Naples was a total shithole. This time we decided to spend just a bit more time there, and while the city does seem to have some issues, there are some amazing areas. My wife and I both decided that next time we would spend more than just a night at a time (which proved hard for exploring extensively with the kids).

A city with coastal and hilltop castles, an extensive waterfront, thousands of years of developed history, and one of the most famous volcanos on earth. Not to mention the city’s proximity to Ischia, Sorrento, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast. The Metro is fairly extensive and covers most of the city, even out as far as Sorrento.

In the early 1990’s, the city decided to build out an extensive office district on the eastern side of the city near Garabaldi and Napoli Centrale Stations. It was master planned by Kenzo Tange and a number of decent sized towers were built by 1995, including what was, at the time, the tallest in Italy. I unfortunately have yet to be able to really explore this district, but I know that there is a beautiful modern church in the center.

Nice thread! Good to see Italy was favored in the photo subforum lately, as it famously is a charming country.

Yeah, all tourists were told the same.
I went to the area once (Pompei is the most interesting pile of ruins I've ever seen) and we hardly could visit the inner city because some people in our group were scared to get mugged and robbed.
So, I can't remember what it looked like.

Some acquaintances of mine visited it not too long ago while they were touring the whole country in summer just prior to Covid and said the old town was still gritty, lacking proper maintenance, but obviously had the bones to be a great old town.
They liked it a lot, called it very underrated, never felt unsafe and said the bad reputation of the city was definitely an exaggerated stereotype.

I can see some scaffoldings to refurbish some facades in your pictures. I guess that's partly what they need to have this place more popular.

I'm fascinated by Naples. It's on my wish list. I know it's rough, it look rough even in the pics, but it probably has the most untapped potential in the whole world. The size of Barcelona, but seems to be completely overlooked.

Thank you for sharing, plinko!

It looks fine, cultural, historic, booming, where did that shithole come from?

I found Rome and Florence to have plenty of rough areas as well. During my Italy trip of 2000, I was completely fascinated by Naples. One thing I didn't know about was the very steep streets and hilltop neighborhoods. I liked it a lot.

Truely Italian food, what's not to like?

I love Italian food, it was a fair question, but notice that the OP only posted pictures of pizza!
I lived with an Italian long enough to get a perspective of the food & culture.
It can basically be boiled down to flour, cheese, & tomatoes with some meat & veggies. Cheers!

Naples is not milan and montreal is not toronto

Very good photos of Naples. You captured the ambiance of the city very well. You can take a funicular up the mountain from the old town and their is an upscale area with some great restaurants and bars offering wonderful views of Naples and the Bay.

i spent two weeks in italy back in may, including a couple of days in naples. i wish we'd stayed there longer instead of florence. i think it was my favorite city of the ones visited so far. i barely scratched the surface...

which pizza joints did you try? my husband and i went with a foodie friend and we tried 50 kalo and gino e torto sorbillo. i would say antico pizza here in atlanta is a pretty good facsimile of the real deal, at least based on my experience from those two places.

Great thread. I also absolutely loved Napoli. Great, interesting, yet messy, neighborhoods. Very nice waterfront. The National Archaeological Museum was spectacular (even though maintained in that "messy" Naples way). And of course the surrounding areas are incredible (Amalfi coast, Vezuvius with Pompei and Herculaneum).
